Will Sony correct the English subtitles in this new version? The current version doesn't have the original theatrical subtitles supervised by Ang Lee, but a simplified translation that loses some of the eloquence of the original.

Modern motion picture color correction tools are almost like Photoshop on steroids in terms of flexibility with the parameter settings and subtle refinements.

Think of it this way. Photoshop is akin to Pac Man today… http://www.google.com/ whereas color correction software is like modern day video games.

Sorry to hear about *the comparative lack of eloquence of the English translation on the Blu-ray edition*.

Honestly, I am not thoroughly familiar with the magnitude and wherefores of this ‘subtitle’ discrepancy so, I hesitate to answer as I had no involvement.

In a nutshell, the English subtitles present on the disc are a dumbed down versiona that lacks the flow of the theatrical subtitles.

A likely reason is that the region 3 DVD shipped at the same time the US theatrical release (I literally had it in hand a week after seeing it theatrically). This disc was also by Sony BTW. Probably someone took the time in-between the HK release (HK films feature English subtitles theatrically, a relic of British rule) to fix the subtitles flow to make it sound more eloquant and coherent in english. Obviously this was done seperately from the home video diviison, and as far as I can tell, they simply repurposed the project files for the R1 CTHD DVD. The region 3 contained the english dub as well.

Good subtitling is an art of striking the balance between average reading speed (the 3x rule) and the necessity of conveying the as much information as possilble. Something that really used to strangle people back in the LD days when they'd put subtitles on the closed captioning track is that you were required to match the english dub by FCC rules, so if you wanted to repurpose those subtitles for broadcast they had to be dubtitles. Obviously this was an oversight of an otherwise well meaning law designed to keep slapdash CCs from being done. I've timed and written thousands of subtitles myself (no, not fansubs) on concert and music videos, and I took great pride in how my subs would switch on the cut/on the downbeat with the song while still being accurate and sounding good to the english ear

Nope, not in its entirety, yet , I just glanced at a minute of it, since I got back very late last night coming down the mountain after watching a climbing stage of the premier bicycle race in North America.

Now, it’s off to Staples Center in L.A. to catch the time trial. Should be cool to see pro bike racers riding through the streets of downtown L.A. with no traffic in sight.
