I hope this send-off -

brings us good luck but, alas, I don’t think our countrymen will fare much better than in the last World Cup so, my fall-back position is to root for England once the quarter finals begin. I figure if we don’t do well, at least we may win the best dressed award in regards to footwear

On a geekified technical note, since the 3D production originates in South Africa using the 1080i/25 European standard, expect the U.S. broadcaster (ESPN) to deliver the 3D images to your TV’s at home most likely in 1080i/30, rather than the network’s standard 720p format in order to avoid a couple of format conversions to get to 720p which would degrade the 3D picture quality.

Not sure, but this may be a first for the broadcaster.

On a related note, P, you've got to check these out, and perhaps have several of them tattooed on your back

Have you actually seen the NYA discs? The Beatles would indeed be a fun band, but it really benefits from somebody incredibly prolific, with a large number of quality demoes and alternate recordings, and an obsessive compulsive need to collect things.
Yeah, I've seen them. They're awesome, I'm just not a big NY fan

I want our guys to go as far as possible, but I feel sort of relieved if they don't finish in last place again a la '98.

In my quick search of the News section, I don’t think “Juan” has provided any recent news about Apocalypse Now Redux.

Given that, I’d like to throw out a bit of good news to fans of the film. It is currently undergoing a new HD master from a new scan of the available film element. Watch for the remastered product in the future on Blu-ray.

Cropped to 2:1 by a revisionist cinematographer on a hopeless crusade.

Speaking of revisionism and appealing to your love of motorcycles...

I have a homemade BD of The World's Fastest Indian from a HDNet capture that was broadcast at the theatrical ratio of 2.39. For whatever reason, the director Roger Donaldson decided to open up this Super35 shot film to 1.78 on Blu-ray and DVD.

All it does is add dead space. The motorcycle itself is shot frequently from the side to it takes up the entire 2.39 frame nicely. 1.78 just adds unnecessary sky and ground.

With newer BDs like Star Trek VI and the first Austin Powers film finally being presented in their proper 2.39 on Blu-ray, I just hope someday it will be revisited.

The Blu-ray looks and sounds superb (much better than the YouTube clip above).

God, I hadn't heard that Hopper died... Not surprising, he's been sick a long time, but it still sucks.

That's TREMENDOUS news, what an absolutely incredible film. Any likelihood of Hearts of Darkness being attached (I figure with the DVD release that rights issues have been settled, but I've got know idea if that means they've reverted to Zoetrope or not).

Had it on my shelf for a couple months, seems like a good time to fire it up.

It will have to be a 4 disc set - we need both cuts and there is one man in the world who wants the movie in a 2.0AR. Normally I would say that there is always the zoom button for whatever narrower aspect ratio he prefers but unfortunately he is the DOP and therefore has something to say on this matter and therefore a 2.35 and a 2.0 version of each cut will have to be included

Oliver, didn't even think of that... Of -course- let's hope we get both versions of the film, so that I can retire both the LD and DVD. And, yeah, the 2.0 AR is super annoying, a little bit of revisionist filmmaking once again, but all is forgiven if we're given the choice.

Penton, how soon will Blu-code v5 (BAE-VX1000) be released? Will it include MVC support or will that be a separate product (e.g. Blu-code 3D)?

Blu-code is a nice product for film encoding because its output has a very pleasing quantization structure. However, I don't think it fares as well for live content at 50/60 Hz. I've been using it on the SVT test sequences and I prefer other encoders.

Also, will it ever get Planar 420 input as an option instead of only YUY2 or V210?

Fortunately there still exist enough scope prints so I would watch the movie that way if Storaro insists on a 2.0 only AR upon release. But one can always hope for the best so right now I am counting on Paramount also giving us a scope version.

Thanks for the update Penton; this will be one of my most anticipated upgrades. Besides that, I've always associated Dennis Hopper with his character from Apocalypse Now, so a new scan will be a nice way for me to remember his contribution to film (although I bet you are more of an Easy Rider fan).
