Default Jason!

Hi Penton

Just wanted to say well-done to all those involved in the new Jason BD release, from the reviews it looks and sounds like a 1963 sfx classic release should.

A quick question, it's not yet announced for Europe, am i better off importing or is likely to make an appearance before xmas?

Hi Penton,
Someone was using DVD Beavers bit-rate vs. time graphs to illustrate to me that Blu-ray's maximum A/V rate does go over 48 Mbps.

Does it? Can you spend a moment just to address the issue for me to better understand it?

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-r...fe_blu-ray.htm

This is the graph for Life. I can see the peaks going over 50, but is this because of inaccuracies in the way the data is read and plotted or does it indeed go over 48 Mbps in parts?

Thanks.
~Steve

It can indeed peak over 48Mbps.

Does that include additional data, or is it the combined Audio/Video stream that can peak over 48 Mbps? Is there anything in the technical white papers that states as much? How does that work if it's supposed to be the cap? Is there a real peak rate?

Avoid the above until you get back to your PVR, hence the "spoiler" tag.

There is a buffer that allows instantaneous peaks. The bitrate is calculated over a period of time (window). You will get different numbers depending on the size of the window used to calculate the bitrate.

I've always embraced animals. Just not to the point of PETA membership.

That dog has the right opinion BTW.

True story: a coyote ran across the highway (2-lane) right in front of me last night. Great timing on his part.

Thanks for the response Stacey. Do you know what the allowable instantaneous peaks are?

So, uh, Columbia, right? Sony now owns Tommy? Man, that'd make a spectacular BD... (Nudge...nudge...)

YAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

Man, this is going to sound AWESOME on BD...

It's too bad it won't include the (excellent) interviews on the 2-disc DVD from the UK, but owning it already three times on DVD (the above release, along with the original and superbit) I'm extremely pleased to add a fourth 5.25" shiny disc to the collection.

I certainly can't complain about the representation that The 'Oo are getting on BD. Now, give me the Quadrophenia 5.1 mix that PT talks about on the DVD-A and I'll be an even happy camper!

Well, why do you think I spoke about the presentation at the Academy to begin with.

The upcoming Blu-ray is sourced from a new HD master derived from a new 4K datacine with a newly re-mastered 5.1 soundtrack plus the original 5.0 Quintaphonic track.

P.S.
The presentation at the Academy was in 2K with the Quintaphonic track. The crowd apparently loved it.

Cristiano Ronaldo losing is always a good thing, bit early to be going to bed though.

Can't wait!

Penton, do you know if the 5.1 mix was derived from the original 5.0 mix (ie. filter out a sub channel and boost the surrounds) or did they go back to the stems and do a modern-style mix from scratch?

...and by "they", was it Pete.

P, without spilling beans you can't, can you speak to the so-called extras that will be included? Again, movie IQ is one thing, but there already exists things like commentary tracks by Ken R, interviews, etc., and I see nary a mumble about any of them.

fyi, in case you've not seen this version:

Along with the original trailer and a press promo compilation of various interview snippets, we get a collection of interesting and in-depth interviews. The longest is with Pete Townsend, running 56 minutes, and it’s a very strong piece. Townsend is a very eloquent speaker and he goes through the ideas behind the album, the transition from album to film and the filming itself. The interviewer Matt Kent prompts him from time to time but he is more than willing to talk in detail and the result is fascinating. More quirky but still riveting is a 20 minute piece with Ken Russell – apparently interviewed by Mark Kermode, who is unseen – that is extremely odd. Russell adopts his usual persona of a demented Cambridge don and comes out with some very funny comments. Whether it gives you any real insight into his working methods is a moot point but it’s certainly fun to watch. Briefer interviews with Roger Daltrey and Ann-Margret are also included. Finally, “The Story of the Sound” is a discussion about the dubbing of the film into Quintophonic sound, with music editor Terry Rawlings and dubbing mixer Ray Merrin. This is an interesting behind-the-scenes technical feature which is a very useful primer on the whys and wherefores of film sound.

I don't post here much but I must say I lost all respect for
him when he spit at the camera man after they were eliminated.
