Ive said it for a while and Ill say it again. I think that gaming and sports are where 3D will ultimately take off.

I am very curious to see a football game in 3DHD!!

From what I have seen an (american) football game in 3DHD looks good, but to me gaming in 3D is the most interesting - that is an application where 3D really adds to the experience imo.

I have read that Avatar 3D is going to do a limited time exclusive with Panasonic. Samsung is also going to have some limited time exclusive titles and Sony has made a deal with Disney. What do you think of studios doing exclusive 3D deals with TV manufactures this fall and winter? To me this is disappointing since their are so few quality 3D Blu-ray titles on the market. For owners of 3D equipment who are enthusiastic about 3D and want to show it to their family and friends the lack of quality 3D titles to purchase is frustrating!

It makes more sense to sell these movies to the general public and offer it free to the purchasers of the TV. I really can't believe anyone would buy a 3D tv based upon an exclusive movie. People are so desperate for 3D content that the Panasonic 3D demo disk is selling from $40 to $80 on ebay. The Blu-ray manufacturers could cash in by delivering quality 3D content to the general public.

Hmmmmmm....I can see sports addicts buying 3D sets en masse.

I can also see 3D movie aficionados buying as well.

I really don't see many gamers buying 3D sets...once the 3D set is bought...sure, but that's just an application. Is the viewing of 3D games going to spur additional 3D HDTV sales the same way as guests viewing sports or 3D movies might?? I think not.

Now, on the other hand, if HBO/networks would offer a popular program similar in scope to "Lost" and /or "Band of Brothers" in 3D ....much more would be gained as far as 3D adoption is concerned.

Ya know Penton, Ive come to realize is that all of this is getting kind of nuts when it comes to trying to please the enthusiast community because they frankly don't seem to know what they want.

I'm still amazed that there were those who actually believed that Cameron didn't know what he was doing when he approved the new Alien master.
It seems you have great faith in some Directors’ judgment as to the quality of the imagery of a motion picture. In that regard, Ridley Scott also has real roots in cinematography (operating the principal camera on Alien) and if you have the same feelings for Ridley as you do for Jim , then you should have no qualms with Ridley’s assessment of 2D conversions…..

I have no problem with that if you leave nobody behind on this earth who loves you or is dependent upon you and as long as you name me as a beneficiary in your Will or Living Trust…..hopefully the later because Living Trusts aint just for *rich* people if you own any real property at all.

But before you embark on any self-destructive downward spiral of risky behavior, first consider signing the petition here, at least for the sake of film school students

Well, now, it seems some of the screenshot science crowd on another forum may beg to differ with Ridley and are pulling out the pitchforks claiming the D-theater version has more detail, less contrast pump, so look out!

A few comments (the very last quote about Fox should be doing their own screenshot comparisons made me laugh out of my seat!):

DTheater version has more artifacts, but Bluray version loses detail in both light AND dark areas, and is cropped and zoomed. What the hell?

Either the BD is slightly stretched, or the DTheather is slightly squished. That would account for the slight differences in the amount of picture in each. Not sure which is correct from those screens.

This thread has saved me $$$.
Thanks

Agreed. Just look at the head of the Chestburster Alien - detail such as tiny veins are blown out by boosted white contrast on the Blu-ray image.

All the money went on Aliens then lol

Doesn't Fox have a DVHS deck setup? So that they could at least compare and do their own screenshot comparison before printing the discs?
The only shot that looks a bit better on the blu is the pod sequence. I prefer the DVHS for the chesburster shot.

And, in a different vein...

How about HDR video using two Canon EOS 5D MK II cameras?
See here.

I'm waiting for the triple-density CCD Panavision.

IMHO, I find the HDR experiments, with a wider dynamic range as well as producing a somewhat ethereal image, to be more exciting. It's new territory that has never been explored in digital or film formats.

Well, I think the last comment above ^ is just an innocent misconception.

But if the remainder of the comments are true and the screenshot science crowd is correct as to the picture quality, then there are going to be a whole lot of embarrassed folks out there who gave PQ predictions.

I thought Alien received a state of the art “restoration”, as the marketing folks like to say. Is the old DVHS version looking that close in PQ to the modern day Blu-ray version, that there is even some question as to which one is superior?

That seems strange.

I started a poll on the 3D Movies thread and a similar poll on the AVS forum under "3D Content" so far the responses seem to be running toward my way of thinking.

That's what I was talking about- higher-element-density CCDs with discrete simultaneous multiplexed capture as an HDR methodology. It's one of the principal avenues John Galt at Panavision is exploring.

Yes, I understand your position and that of other consumers sharing the same sentiment. On the flip-side, I believe the Finance Managers of the content providers (studios) probably would call this sort of thing something like ‘good business sense’ based on their models and their arithmetic.

I’m not sure what you want of me. With regards to the thread, are you desiring that I pass on the results of the poll to decision-makers in the business as a form of ‘enlightenment’ so as to re-direct their course, so to speak?

Be patient. This all will pass in time.
