Thanks but it's moot at this point, as I just checked the program and I don't see any mention of a softball challenge.

Seems the only baseball bat I'll using these days is on 'Saprano' in the 4K threads.

He just needs to acknowledge that he took the gamble and stop complaining about it. If he's unhappy with the results of his choice, he's the one who can change the situation.

He's not complaining, just saying "See ya" to all the fans that have spent years bashing him. He doesn't need to acknowledge anything.
I associate irate SW fanboy to a 1yr old child: crys when he doesn't get what he wants.

Kris,

Finally got a chance to pop this in last night and watch the first episode. In a word, the video encode is STUNNING in spite of the 1080i encode. I just wish the audio track was 5.1 instead of stereo.

Not at all, read the exact same article...just have a different view of it than you do.

From the LoA thread:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...ips-hpa-290677

While this is certainly exciting news, as on poster pointed out I thought this being scanned 8k vice 4k...not that I'm complaining, just curious.

My understanding was that the film was scanned at 8K and digital work was performed on a 4K product of that scan.

Well that would certainly make sense. Heck LoA in 2k, at this point, would be great. I guess I'm wondering why that article made no mention of 8k work? I always thought you oversold in articles such as that one, not undersold. In any event, I did like the part "blu-ray later this year"!

Doctorossi, LoA was on your all time favorites list wasn't it? Just out of interest, would you double dip on a 4k bluray version in the future or just buy the regular bluray? This is the issue i will be facing with classics. Bought The Sound Of Music on bluray (for girlfriend, honest! )and it looked superb. However, on a OLED, i can imagine been tempted with certain films that have similar cinematography.

The question for you Doc, Penton Man and to forum members is, would the benefits of 4k shine through on restored classics that have been handled expertly. Or would it be very subtle with older films, regardless of the quality of mastering.

Yes, it's firmly planted in my top 20 (and probably top 5, if forced). I would absolutely re-dip on it for a 4K.

I'm a big fan of near-field (monitor) viewing, so I could theoretically find a screen on which to enjoy the difference without needing to destroy my living room with a 20'-wide monstrosity.

I hear LOA is coming out soon on Blu, I know because of the clips shown on the trailers on the discs I bought 5+ years ago...

ps. P, you'll be amused I'm off to Cozumel again on Friday, will let you know how it goes, doing it with a new dive op, steel 120s x 2 dives to start each day...That'll be, what, 5 hrs under water?

Once I finish here, I’ll head on over to the LoA thread and see if I can helpfully contribute at least a little something to the folks in the Blu-ray movies North America forum.

I believe your unclear because of the way the Hollywood Reporter article quickly moved from reporting on the Lawrence of Arabia restoration to Sara’s (from Disney) statement “In a perfect world we would be scanning everything at 4K (resolution).”

Doc, is correct, if you’ll remember my past post about LoA - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...aw#post5673213

As to a reason why super high resolution scans like 8K are “taken down” or *finished* in 4K, it is for handling and working with the files, for instance, the storage spec and processing power of most digital high-end non-linear color grading systems like the Baselight 8, allows them to do their real time multi-layer magic in the 4K realm with no associated latency or bottle-neck, see Media handling -
http://www.filmlight.ltd.uk/pdf/data...LMultiNode.pdf

And advanced color correction involves more than just adding in color. I do think you indirectly figured out what Tech Retreat I was attending this week – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...at#post5790635
which is affectionately referred to among some attendees as the annual…‘tech geeks in the desert get-together’.

I rather liked the short article by THR journalist because invariably, I think that when someone hypes some of these motion pictures which are due out on Blu-ray, the final result doesn’t meet some peoples’ expectations….no matter how good they are.

I think it’s safer to be cool, calm and unassuming rather than *rah-rah-sis-boom-bah*.

For example, this was one presentation form the retreat - http://www.atsc.org/cms/pdf/bootcamp/ATSC_2.pdf

Which; however, is worthwhile to peruse if only for the fact that it expands upon what I already mentioned here (bolded in paragraph 3)… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...on#post5766366

P.S.
Steedeel, now don’t get too worried about the “Quality is no longer king” slide in the broadcaster’s Powerpoint presentation, as there will always be a place for quality.
