You and anyone else who thinks so is wrong. And no it isn't a matter of opinion.

I hate upgrading when there's many titles I don't yet have one copy of... but that does look like a significant improvement.

Beautiful. I've been wanting to see this again, but I'll wait for a worldwide release.

One would certainly hope so. (You don't happen to work for Universal at their HD mastering department? )

I'm sure it will be released on UHD Blu-ray, but that doesn't mean it will be available straight away. There seems to be this mentality from some that every title with a 4k master will be released on UHD Blu-ray as soon as it hits the market or not long after, I don't see that happening, it will be gradual process. I'll put it this way, if this time next year Groundhog Day is out on UHD Blu-ray, I'll purchase it for you.

Are the Japanese subtitles forced?

You must be really easily fooled by artificial sharpening then. And this is not taking colors into consideration, which are also easily better on the JP blu ray.

The only thing the old release might have on the new one is the framing, but this is impossible to know. Seems like a copycat case of the old vs new releases of Rain Man. Except in that case it was more cropping than framing.

???
It has been mentioned that the film's DP John Bailey was involved with the new transfer.

The new framing is clearly superior...some examples:

Check out the edge enhancement of the old Blu-ray >>>

Also notice the superior detail of the new transfer.

Yes it is barebones, there are no extras, the menu is in Japanese and only has language, subtitle and scene options. Much better coverart than the US release though.

No surprise as JP has handled the other Sony 4K catalog masters this way. Looks like I will be keeping the U.S. BD for the extras.

I see that there is already a placeholder for a remastered edition with no release date. Maybe an indication that a 4K disc is coming out soon in the US? Either way I'm excited that this great little film has gotten the proper treatment it deserves.

I'm really debating about importing the JP disc though. I havent ordered from CDJapan is a while, can anyone tell me if they accept PayPal?

Edit: I checked out the site and they do! Good price on this title too.
