That's the thing, it already says off when I check the subtitles as the disc is playing. BUT I had already selected the second subtitle option (which I thought was off, but it must be a selected-captions-only track) from the disc menu before playing it, so I'll try playing it with the full subtitle track running first of all and then turn them off manually using the remote. I think that'll do it, thanks for the heads-up Cevo.

Just to confirm: Cevolution is 100% right regarding the subs, you can turn them off FULLY once the movie starts instead of picking one or the other in the disc menu (the second option, which I thought was off, appears to be forced place captions instead). So just play the movie on default settings, turn off the subs with player remote rather than in the disc menu and you're good to go. Good catch!

I know that now. I assumed that the second option in the menu was off, when it's actually the place captions. But the heck of it is, I've just played it again (interrupting EFNY) with the second option in the disc menu selected and now the caption doesn't come up at all. Whatever.
Bottom line is, no forced subs! Me wrong. Me bad. ![]() |

Oh, and folks shouldn't be put off by the single-layer encode, the grain is so ultra-fine there's no problem with the compression. The image has got so much organic texture, it's about as far from video as I could ever imagine Blu-ray looking. I just hope they'll level out the skin tones a bit more for the US release. (I wonder if the 4K version on 4K Unlimited has the same issues?)
Watching this yesterday, I did a double-take when I saw the just-married kid ("Wrestlemania!!") because I never knew it was Michael Shannon. |

Saw this in another thread here:
Native 4K web rip vs Japanese 4K mastered blu ray Not quite the same frame. Gotta admit, compared to the Dracula one there's definitely some notable difference in detail here. Still clearly not as much as a DVD vs blu ray difference though. Looks like that even though it's encoded in HEVC and has a 50 mbps bit rate, it still has compression issues. Even though UHD blu ray can have bit rates as high as 100 mbps, because it's only limited to 100 GB per disc, very long movies like Lawrence of Arabia won't even be able to run on 50 mbps if they're limited to a single disc. |
