Looks like we got nothing to worry about.

Quote:
I was able to see and sample check discs from the set, to ask lots of questions and to learn more about the overall content and quality of the set. What I learned was... well, I think the best word to describe it is this: encouraging.
Quote:
As a result of this hands-on experience, however, I am more excited about this release than I was before.
Quote:
I'm told that - particularly with Episode I - when the original DVD master was created from the source files, the state of the technology at that time meant that some of the image area was lost all around the frame. In other words, you weren't seeing the complete "film" image in the DVD master. Today's mastering technology corrects this, so you are now finally seeing the entire film image of Episode I on Blu-ray
Quote:
In addition, there are improvements in the image quality of the Prequel films on Blu-ray simply related to the improved "state of the art" of mastering from digital source material. In particular, since this is a new Blu-ray master from the original digital files, the unnecessary edge-enhancement and color-timing issues that plagued the previous Episode I DVD presentation should no longer be an issue.
Quote:
On the audio front, you will be very pleased to know that most of the audio complaints fans had about these films on DVD - about particularly Episode IV - have been addressed and fixed for Blu-ray. For example, many of you will recall that in the 2004 Episode IV DVD release, the music in the rear channels of the 5.1 mix was often reversed. (Credit to Bits reader Neil S. Bulk who first brought that issue to our attention back in 2004.) You should all be very be pleased to know that that's no longer the case. Finally... fixed!
Quote:
So the next obvious question is, how to the films look in HD based on what we say on Friday morning? The answer is very good indeed. Do they look better than the 2004 DVDs? Absolutely. Do they look better than recent 1080p HD cable and satellite broadcasts? Again, yes - not just for the fixes to problem A/V issues that have been done but also because of the added video and audio data rate afforded by the Blu-ray format, and the fact that each film comes on its own BD-50 disc. And don't forget that Episodes I, II and III should look fantastic simply for having been mastered directly from the digital production files.

you're reading this, but I'm still back on page 1257!

I wonder how far behind I'll be when I catch up to this post - (right now Beast is still defending TPM and Katie Lucas has been getting nasty tweets)

I say wait for the reviews before you decide to cancel.
We should not judge P/Q quality by a blu-rip.

Holy crap. Why would you go through the effort to add a detail (which I like) of having a reflection in the Cloud City window....and then have no consistency with Luke's lightsaber? Who supervised this? Was it edited by a bunch of people who didn't bother to communicate with each other? Pathetic.

And now that I look at the comparison pix even more.....in a number I like the non Blu-ray versions. It's like they just took a Sharpen filter and cranked it all the way up. I don't like it.

And furthermore - other than Greedo shooting first, CGI'ing Yoda in the 1st movie, and Vader's grabbing a conscience.....Lucas' improvement consist of nothing more than just showing more crap into frame. He did the same thing with THX1138 - hey Lucas, more doesn't mean it's better!

The leak made no mention of the pic quality ONLY what Lucas has changed and that's it.

No where ever was it mentioned.

You've said that what...a dozen times?

The reviews won't go live until release date which means many people won't be able to cancel preorders if they wait for reviews.

And unless you got a great price (say a 50% Barnes and Noble coupon back in January) there's really no downside to waiting for reviews before deciding to buy.

With a huge release like this the advance reviews (if any) will come on the eve of the release and most likely be very positive. It will take a couple days after the release for a real consensus to begin to form.

I guess I should weigh in since I am a hardcore Star Wars fan and always have been. I actually have appreciated all of the changes to the 1997, 2004, and 2011 BDs except for three and these will always stick with me:

1) Replacing Shaw with Christensen. That was just overly idiotic.

2) Greedo shooting first because it alters the audience's first impression of Han.

3) The newly added nos. I actually thought the first no where he just speaks it was ok, but the second drawn out no was just horrible. It reminded of a kid having a toy taken away from him.

Nevertheless, I am still buying the set just to get The Empire Strikes Back in 1080p with lossless audio.

Default Noooo to the Noooo's

Just saw the scene with the added No's for Vader. Very bad.

Part of Vader's personality was his strong silent type.

Maybe Lucas should and some deleted scenes showing Vader in therapy sessions or chatting away with his girlfriends while camping it up. That would do wonders to add depth to his character and "futurize" Star Wars for generations to come.

Something I'm puzzled by, that maybe people here can clear up for me:

When GL first started making digital changes to the OT (for the 1997 release, I think?), he must have done a restoration and reference scan of the original versions of the films, no?

Is there any logic or credibility to the idea that he didn't keep those scans somewhere, either as source material for alterations or simply archives?

So when Lucas says he *can't* release the original theatrical versions on DVD or Blu-ray, because they "don't exist", he's *got* to be telling porkies, hasn't he?

This is what I personally don't get about the guy. I'm not out to rag on him, and the only thing I'm "hating" is that inane piece of newspeak itself, but I don't understand why George Lucas revises his own PR history as much as he revises his films. Why claim he never said there would be nine Star Wars films, when I and countless others have copies of the souvenir program from the film's première where he says precisely that, and even details what the third trilogy would be about? Why claim he doesn't even have a copy of any of the original films, when he must have had one to even start making changes from? Why claim he's fixed all that was wrong with the 2004 release -- which itself was claimed to have fixed everything that was wrong with the previous version -- when reports are starting to make clear he hasn't?

Bottom line for me: the guy can do anything he wants with his films, and I'll either buy them -- again! -- or I won't. That's how it works. But I'm bewildered by the constant flow of revisionism and what looks like outright fibbing.

Or am I just missing something?

I've been trying to catch up with this thread just in case I miss some news about the blu-rays. I gave up at page 1266, there's nothing but pages after pages of same bickering over and over again. I mean, SAME THING, OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Now I'm afraid to post my opinion here, I feel vulnerable with whatever I'm gonna say here.

So, I'm just gonna ask questions then. Any news about the PT? Is there any word on the PQ/AQ of all 6 movies yet?

Thanks.
