I imagine Disney is waiting to see how VII does, theatrically, before having to partner up with Fox(distribution) over the previous films.

Waiting to see how Episode VII does?

They have faith in Episode VII and the Star Wars franchise already. It's been a huge marketing cash cow for decades. I don't think they're even considering the possibility of Episode VII underperforming.

But could you imagine if all they do is re-release the existing BDs in new packaging, along with digital copies that include the unaltered trilogy on Disney Movies Anywhere? I think that's scarily possible...

Or a transfer of the non-anamorphic DVDs on Bluray as a bonus content?

While I am waiting for something about the 4K OOT this year, I'd actually like for Disney to release the Ewok Adventures and the complete series of Droids and Ewoks (the latter 2 on DVD) to tie-in with VII.

Yuck. I'd rather take the digital copies over those. Heh. But seriously, both of these scenarios would suck.

You mean the 2 movies?
yes, I'd like that too, although I have seen only the first movie.

Here is my prediction:

- Something will be announced at the San Diego Comic Con (strong rumors possible before then)
- The restored originals will be released for a limited run at IMAX theaters
- Afte which the Blus will be released sometime just before the theatrical release of the new movie

We know 4K work has been done on the originals around 2012 as Radience spilled those beans on their Web site before pulling it shortly after people on this site starting noticing it. Of course, it might just be new scans of the special edition incarnation instead...but I think based on other rumors, it will be the original trilogy and it ties in better with the marketing.

I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see it happening. Disney, obviously, has big plans for the SW franchise...some, of which, has already started(Rebels). I don't think getting the unaltered versions out is high on their list of things to do. Plus there's the whole issue of having to split the money with Fox(Distribution), and after investing over $4Billion, I don't think Disney want to share any of the sandbox, with anyone....but we shall see.
As for annoucnements happening at SDCC, I don't see that happening either, when they can be the only "voice in the room" on May the 4th. Which is two months earlier than SDCC.
I just think they are waiting to see just how well VII does.

It's probably not "high on their list" but I believe, based on rumors and Bob Iger's own words, that there will indeed be some kind of release used in their overall marketing plan to ramp up hype for EP VII. Look at what Iger said a few weeks ago:

Interviewer: "What are you going to do to ramp up this release? Are you going to re-release all the old Star Wars?"

Bob Iger: "Well, that sounds like a good idea [smiling] - that sounds like a great idea, actually, Julia. There are a number of plans that we have between now and December, 2015 when the film comes out. The good news is that there is strong interest, not only in the new film, but in the films that have been released before, and we're going to be really smart about it, and make sure, more than anything else, that we ready people for what we think is going to be just a tremendous movie event in 2015."

Oh I read the article.
Now about what you pointed out, one word could've answered Julia's question. Instead we got a paragraph. Of course I'm not in the Disney boardroom, so I don't know what will happen. Instead of Mr Iger flat out saying "Yes", he did the industry tap dance, and skirted around answering the question.
As I said at the beginning of my previous post: "I hope I'm wrong, but..."

I don't think there's any question we'll get the original unaltered trilogy this year.

While I'm excited about that, I sort of hope it also comes with a final end-all-be-all special edition version too. With Lucas out of the way, some things could finally be done right to make it truly special, like Han could shoot first again, Darth's NOOOO could be removed, Sebastian Shaw's force ghost could be restored (or at least bring in Hayden and makeup him up to look older), and maybe Jedi Rocks could be tempered down, --- all while maintaining most of the good things that worked well like saber fixes, CGI enhanced falcon and x-wing shots, cloud city backgrounds, removal of Darth's eyebrows in ROTJ, Ian McD in Empire, the added wampa scenes in Empire, and the expanded ending of ROTJ (which was much better than yub yub IMO). (I also wouldn't mind a few new things too like adding a few of Han's "maneuvers" to the Falcon's escape from Mos Eisley since right now all it does is fly straight, fixing Luke's white saber in ANH, and smoothing out the cut jumps in ANH when Luke ignites the saber).

Honestly, if they did even just some of those things, I daresay that while I would like to have the unaltered versions, they likely wouldn't be my go-to versions whenever I watched 4-5-6.

Ha... I watched the "despecialized" version of Empire last night with the wife and actually found myself missing the improved ship effects and wampa scene. Now I hate myself.

To spin this broken record again, there is NOTHING to work out because the deal is already place and has been for a long time. They've already reissued the Blu-rays in new combo packs since the Disney takeover, so it's done. They're not going to withhold a release that will promote their new franchise and earn them some profits just to avoid sharing some cash. 100% of nothing is still nothing.

We already have. The BD/DVD combo packs were produced by Disney/Lucasfilm and distributed by Fox, to say nothing of the continued distibution of the 2011 set. It's done. Fox's distribution deal is already in place and will have nothing to do with the decision to release the unaltered trilogy. This is not the drama you're looking for.

I'm not looking for any drama. If Disney/Fox want to re-re-release those discs, I'm sure Disney wouldn't care one iota as they would only receive money. They don't have to do any work short of designing the packaging, unless they wanted to recycle that too.
BUT, if you want the UOT's; Disney, more precisely LFL, is going to have to prep them. This takes two things: time and money.
So bringing up the recycled discs has no bearing on the UOT releases, which is why I don't mention it.
Like you, and like everyone else in this thread, I'm speculating as to why Disney would wait on releasing the UOT's.
So again: We....shall.....see!

I would be okay with a 'final cut' of each OT movie alongside the UOT. While there is a lot to like in the SE (much of what you mentioned), there are a lot of stupid things such as CG rock, NOOOOOO, Greedo shooting first, etc... that could easily be removed.

However, just to make sure no one complains, maybe a two disc set with disc 1 being the UOT, and disc 2 being the 2011 Lucas edition and the 2015 (fingers crossed!) 'final cut'.
