And I don't think anyone ever had any issue with him messing with the films that much, just his reluctance to release them as they came out in the theaters originally. If he wanted to replace Chewbacca with Cookie Monster, that's his prerogative, but it shouldn't negate the version that everyone fell in love with. I think that's where the vitriol came from.

Of course, I never shared the same vitriol and never understood how people could treat a man with such derision who created this thing that they loved so much. I just don't think it's fair to him.
From an artistic standpoint, they will forever be his films. That's my point. If he was not alive, I'd see a release that had every version of the films. But the man is still with us. Even with the sale, does Disney have the authority to revert what Lucas wanted?

Not a chance in Hell Disney would pay literally billions for a property they weren't given full control over. That makes no sense whatsoever.

A link to a story reporting the other site running the story which is likely click bait. Let's hope not

I was buying these regardless because I wanted STAR WARS on digital for my iPad and the new (probably useless new special features), so it makes no difference to me if this story is actually fact.

I love 95% of the changes to the films. None of them, to me, altered the story in anyway.

But, this would be extraordinary if Lucas relinquished on this issue of what films he wanted out there. I don't think this rumor is true but stranger things have happened.

Oh, I'll report as soon as I can. I'll comb through the films to see what's the same and what's different.

Not expecting anything different but I'll look.

Still, if changes were made, why the hell is this not hitting Blu as well?

Indeed. Do some quick math: LucasFilm was purchased for $4billion.

Assume they spend 400 mil (which is probably hi) to produce and advertise Episode 7, what do you think their take is? Give the BO a close to billion dollar take, give them half and they've made 100 million. But then add in the merchandising, which Disney is the best in the business at and they probably net another few hundred million easy.

They have that 5 more times if the plans for Episode 12 are true. They have 3 spinoffs in the works. They have merchandising for the original trilogy, except distribution of ANH. But toys, mugs, theme park rides are 100% Disney.

And there's a little franchise called Indiana Jones that's frankly the elephant in the room, and you can bet they'll reboot/recast James Bond style.

In short, 4 billion was pennies on the dollar for the true value of LF.

Hi!

Yes, I did read it, and what you said made no sense whatsoever so it wasn't even worth acknowledging.

The reason Disney doesn't own the things you mentioned is because when Disney purchased Marvel, Marvel themselves didn't own those properties. They never did (different studios do, like Columbia with the original Spiderman films, Fox with the original X Men, etc.) Marvel never had control over those original film properties, suddenly being purchased by Disney wouldn't magically give them control over them. They bought EVERYTHING Marvel owned, just like the bought the full rights to the Star Wars franchise in terms of what Lucas owned.

Made no sense, that they paid billions for part and not all. Hmmmmm, ok then. Not wanting to rain on your parade. Carry on

Marvel does own the properties by the way, they don't hold the movie rights to them currently, having contracted them to various studios such as fox and for theme park rights to universal. But, carry on

Just saying that Disney has paid billions for something they don't have full control over, but I was just acknowledging your comment. Carry on

He's talking about the MCU films, not the Fox properties.

He's talking about Disney acquisitions. Marvel own all characters in their universe, but control of the movie rights to spiderman is with Columbia as they contracted it that way, xmen sits with fox as they contracted it that way etc etc.

His comment about Disney not paying billions for full control of an asset is a bit short sighted when they did exactly that through the purchase of marvel. It has meant marvel has had to pursue second tier character films instead of some of their greatest and most loved characters as they passed the rights out when they were going bust. As we know now, they have been negotiating hard to get everything back under their roof ever since.

But hey, what do you expect in this forum. Logic and sensible debate descends into insults and cat calls.

You don't make any sense. Disney acquired EVERYTHING that Marvel owned, Marvel could not sell Disney the rights to certain franchises (as in, all the ones you cited) because they DID NOT OWN THEM. Disney purchased all of Marvel's properties, just like they purchased all Lucasfilm properties.

Apples and oranges though.

Marvel had only licensed certain rights to those outside companies. Sure they could keep them forever if they play their cards right but there always exists the opportunity to get them back somehow.

Star Wars is Lucasfilm which is Star Wars. Are we to assume that Disney allowed Lucas to keep the rights to this earlier version? That just doesn't make sense to me. Why would he keep that version to himself? Granted, I suppose that it's POSSIBLE but highly unlikely.
