And for all the talk about improved gradations on the 8K panels the 14-bit processing on the ZD9 is still incredibly effective i.e. I don't see banding unless it's there in the source.

...And if you can find an old Z9D (75" or 100" Class) to compare with.

I too have one in the place we keep down in SD, (in fact, I think I revealed that somewhere on this forum years ago when someone asked me about my device ownership), but my TV fanboyism is long over since my Qualia days.

I had never heard of this. But perhaps not entirely surprising, since I'm from Europe. Guess 005 and 006 would be something I would have like to have at the time...if only I could afford them then. ![]() |

Yet Robert, I read recently that a 4k UHD Blu-ray disc can actually look better, and be more faithful to how the cinematographer and director intended the movie to look, if that 4k disc is played on a high quality 4k display, rather than being played on an 8k display. And the reason for that is that the pixel grid presented by the signal from a 4k disc is an EXACT match for the pixel grid of a 4k TV, which gives you a situation that's just like overlaying an exact copy of an 8 x 10 photo right on top of the original 8 x 10 photo, with the match lining up so precisely, that each particular part of the picture on the copy is exactly directly on top of the corresponding part of the picture on the original photo. But in the case of a 4k disc being played on an 8k TV, obviously the TV must perform scaling to make 4k information fill an 8k grid, and its likely that the result will not look as good, since obviously 4k resolution being manipulated to fit an 8k grid, simply can't be as precise of a match as playing a 4k signal on a TV that has a 4k grid. And these claims that an 8k TV can significantly upconvert a 4k signal into something approaching 8k quality are pure BS, since extra resolution that never existed in the original signal on the 4k disc, simply can't be arbitrarily created, without changing the intended look that the cinematographer and the director actually had for their movie, when they did its photography. Anyhow, long story short, though I can't remember exactly where I read it, an article I read last week warned folks not to be disappointed if they discover that the 4k material that they've been enjoying does not look as good on 8k TVs. |

scaling up to a non-integer factor would be problematic, traditional upscaling is pretty good, machine learning upscaling has the potential to be even better - https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.09077

Some 4K material is 2K native upscaled to 4K.

Which brings us to the question of a 2K DI UHD BD being so much better on a 8K displays versus a 4K display?
So Robert use Pacific Rim UHD BD for a comparison as one example. This title while HDR really shined the level of detail increase was more subtle. ![]() |
