I can imagine that over time nearly all movies will have Dolby Vision, and eventually the list would be much more compact if it listed the titles without Dolby Vision instead. Right now I think only Fox has no plans to release on DV, but surely they will capitulate if everyone else releases DV.

Right. At least regarding the major studios I am. I don't see any reason to think otherwise. With Warner, Universal, Lionsgate, Paramount and Sony soon to be releasing DV discs, the so-called format war with dynamic HDR on the shiny platter is a non-starter. Fox and Samsung are all alone on that island now. Disney's disc sales are huge compared with other studios (they are usually behind Blu-ray's biggest sales weeks) and it's only a matter of time before they release on UHD BD and they are known to support DV.

I never said floodgates but I see no reason not to be optimistic about even Sony. They aren't on that Island the last I checked. Paramount will go along with whatever WB does and Panasonic's UHD BD clout in the U.S. is selling a handful of UHD players.

I don't think it will be that huge. I believe most of the UHD BDs will be HDR10. With a select few mastered in Dolby Vision. Pretty much like how most of the BDs are released with 7.1 soundtracks, and only some in Dolby Atmos.

Of course lessor titles and movies from minor distributors and many catalogs may not get the DV layer and just continue to be base HDR10. I don't know the extra cost or effort associated with adding the DV layer so I couldn't say. |

Yeah, I was thinking that the added encoding complexity of DV (plus the licensing costs for the indie distributors) would likely mean that it's not going to be used on every little thing, see the mini-movies on the Despicable Me discs for a start.
But if the majors continue to use 4000 nit grades for HDR10 then that's one of DV's intended USPs taken care of already, it's more the extended bit depth (which may/may not see huge improvements on anything but animation, particularly considering panels are mostly 10-bit anyway so the 12-bit source will still need to be dithered back down to 10-bit) and special sauce metadata (for remapping to less than fully specced TVs) that are the biggest draws right about now. |

I know they've both done DV grades online, but one still doesn't automatically equal the other especially at Sony where internal politics seem to take on a hellish new dimension about what dept. should be doing what, lest we forget Sony's own 4K streaming app.
Not saying it'll never happen for those two, just that a few more stars might need to align first. The irony is that these DV discs are probably being authored with Sony software and pressed at Sony DADC! |

So mad about this. I would have zero reason to buy a Blu-ray player. Now my PS4 just hanging out collecting dust because I don't game much anymore.

And they are releasing UHD discs themselves. So shouldn't it be in their own interest to promote the format? PS3 playing Blu-rays helped that format immensely, it's weird they don't wanna see the same thing happening with UHD discs. Particularly when even Xbox One plays UHD discs these days. ![]() |
