Marvel's casting has always been on the side of so crazy it just might work. I mean, the guy who played the Human Torch and starred in Not Another Teen Movie as the greatest soldier in the Marvel Universe, and the man every superhero would take orders from? Get outta here!

The fat guy from Parks and Rec leading an intergalactic band of a**holes against one of the baddest motherf***ers in the galaxy? You've gotta be kidding me.

The only way they could succeed is if they excelled. There had to be no room for "meh", and that brought an edge of danger and intrigue to the proceedings. They did absolutely excel, and it was a revelation to witness.

Benedict is so right, so perfect for the role, that it's obvious. And obvious has never been Marvel's MO. That's why this is so anticlimactic for me. There's just no surprise here. He's gunna do just fine. But I'm not sure that's good enough right now.

Of course I support him and Marvel's decision-making process, I have no reason not to. Of course I'll be there day one. I just can't say they've really peaked my interest beyond my own brand loyalty.
I don't see how Scarlett Johansson was "so crazy it might work." Or RDJ for that matter. Or Tobey Maguire.

Well, regarding Tobey, I'm definitely talking exclusively Marvel Studios. Sorry, I should have specified. RDJ's last role was in The Shaggy Dog two years prior. He was still a wildcard and hadn't begun his comeback tour yet. And Scarlett was very much still a drama and romantic comedy star, save for The Island. So putting her in an action movie/superhero role was still a question mark at the time.

OK, fair enough.

Will Cabbagepatch be as good as Peter Hooten though?

Joaquin Phoenix On Almost Playing DR. STRANGE & Still Being A Marvel Movie Fan
Quote:
Now that Benedict Cumberbatch has been officially confirmed as our big-screen Doctor Strange, the man that looked likely to take the role for a while leading up to that can speak a bit more freely. He still won't really discuss how far he came, but does reveal how much he enjoys Marvel's films.

When the rumor first hit that Joaquin Phoenix was being looked at for the title role in Marvel's planned Doctor Strange adaptation, fans held their breath in anticipation. Then, it was reported that the actor was actually in "final talks" for the role, which is usually a sign that it's in the bag. This turned out to premature however, and Phoenix passed. At the time we heard this was because he baulked at the multiple-movie contract he would have had to sign, and wanted to be free to make different types of films when he felt like it, but we never heard that from the horse's mouth. Now, during press for his new movie Inherent Vice, Phoenix was asked outright how close he came to playing the Sorcerer Supreme by the website Nuke The Fridge. His answer was a simple and direct "I don't know", but when pushed to speak about his Marvel negotiations he did offer a little more on his feelings towards the studio itself.

"I like all sorts of movies. I know that I typically do dramas that I guess are maybe considered independent but I like all sorts of different movies. I’m just looking for good characters and big ideas and a great filmmaker. Sometimes the fit is right and that’s it.” Those guys make great movies. I loved Iron Man, I liked Guardians of the Galaxy. I really like the movies they make. I enjoy watching them. I think they do them really well. The superhero movies are our version of those great Kung Fu movies. I enjoy that.”

So maybe it wasn't the contract after all -- maybe he just wasn't overly impressed by the material! Could we see Phoenix as a different Marvel character some day perhaps? He certainly seems to be a fan at least. Are you glad he passed so Cumberbatch could step into the cape, or would you have preferred Phoenix in the role? Sound off in the usual place.

Maybe it also came down to Cumberbatch and Phoenix, and for X reason (Salary, availability for sequels, etc.) Marvel picked the former?

We might never know

Something about that might be revealed some day. I wouldn't doubt it.

Still hope for Phoenix in another role though. Maybe as a villain instead.

Maybe Phoenix just wanted a more traditional conventional superhero role rather than be "strange" character.

Well that's proof that Batman Vs Superman will suck. He turned that down without a thought. Which is good I hope they reboot the Snyderverse and do it right with him as Luthor hopefully.

Maybe that is just a sign that Joaquin Phoenix was not the right actor for the Doctor Strange role ?

We just got confirmation from Marvel last week that Benedict Cumberbatch is set to play Doctor Strange in the eponymous Marvel movie, and now word is coming as to who might co-star as the character’s mentor -- the Ancient One!

Latino Review reports that Morgan Freeman, Bill Nighy and Ken Watanabe have all been approached for the role in Doctor Strange. Freeman, of course, has some superhero experience thanks to his turn as Lucius Fox in The Dark Knight series (and so does Watanabe, actually, having played the faux Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins). Nighy hasn’t appeared in any superhero films yet, unless you count Astro Boy or, uh, Underworld.

What’s interesting about these picks is that Marvel clearly isn’t focusing on race for this casting. The character is traditionally depicted as Asian, having been born in Tibet. He is responsible for training Stephen Strange in the ways of the mystic arts, and would also later assist the good doctor in his adventures at times. He also trained Strange’s eventual nemesis, Baron Mordo.

Doctor Strange is being directed by Scott Derrickson for a November 4, 2016, release.

I agree with your wife 110%. If not him I'd have chosen Kenneth Tsang or Andy Lau Tak Wah. Possibly Ken Watanabe anyway.
Baron Mordo would be a great villain along with Dormammu is the larger threat.
