You don't want a Doctor Strange who is light hearted in the way RDJ played Stark.

Strange was initially very egotistical and an overall douche bag who learned how to be a decent human being. I think Phoenix could certainly pull this off quite easily, and his 'quirkiness' would be an asset to a very quirky character.

I mean, Marvel are smart enough to have earned some trust in this regard so hopefully they're aware of all that and it fits with their vision. But recent experiences with Edward Norton, Edgar Wright and a few others suggest that they're not immune to such errors.

We shall see...

I think He will do just fine playing Doctor Strange. People weren't so sure about Robert Downey Jr playing Iron Man 'Tony Stark', when he was cast to play that part and look at how well that had turned out .

I'm so used to Phoenix playing a bad guy. He'd be better off as Dormammu really.

No, I don't particularly, but I suspect Marvel does. With most of their main leads about to quit in the next couple of years (AVENGERS 3 excepted), I think they'll be looking for another cash-cow along IRON MAN lines; and the more DC pursues the "no jokes" strategy, the more humour will become Marvel's USP.

Note the section of your post I've bolded: That's pretty much IRON MAN, no? If you think DR STRANGE is going to be some weird esoteric piece with a grim disposition, I'd say you're wrong.

Note that I'm not suggesting Phoenix will be bad. I just think he's temperamentally ill-suited for this project. I suspect, in fact, that it won't happen at all.

It's not a world that's as comfortable for him, and he's just not certain he can do it. If Marvel can get past any issues Phoenix has with the larger contract they still have to get over the doubt this terrific actor has about working in this larger environment."

Doctor Strange is slated to go before cameras in early 2015 under the direction of Scott Derrickson from a script by Joe Spaihts.

Phoenix always truck me as somewhat who wouldn't be to comfortable with the way Marvel operate which is why I was still very surprised when they said the deal was close to being done. If he boards officially but if not no biggie.

I always figured this was the problem to begin with. I'm shocked he made it this far in negotiations, honestly. I like him a lot, but I understand the uncertainty. But Marvel needs to keep moving forward if they can't lock him down. There's many talented actors out there who could do the role just as well as he could.

They could always give him another role in another film that wouldn't rely heavily on green screens. Something more in his comfort range.

What about Ewan McGregor? I saw Jack the Giant Slayer last night there are a few scenes in there where he resembled Dr. Strange slightly.

Personally, I would rather have Jack Huston than anyone for this role.
