Like the movie a lot, full thoughts later, but one thing that struck me the most was how Michael Giacchino just completely recycled his Star Trek score here. It was practically the same exact theme!

So he'll be joining in the fight with them. Which is what I was saying...haha. I didn't mean joining the team, but joining them in the fight against Thanos, absolutely.

I have to watch this again, I fell asleep just as he started training, and woke up during the mid credit scene!

I was so tired all day, but I was sure I could make it, should have gone for the 7pm showing not the 10pm lol

From what I did see I was in love, that fight scene at the beginning was spectacular!

I haven't even seen the film yet but having listened to the score I don't see how you can say that. It's a very different style of instrumentation and thematically doesn't sound remotely the same.

Granted, it has Giacchino's style all over it but I think it sounds vastly different.

I am not sure which clip you were listening to, but the main theme is almost identical, no question about it. I will try to find a comparison clip.

I listened to the entire score. The main theme is quite different.

He was a New Avenger.

Historically he's a Defender, but now the Avengers emcompasses most of the Marvel A-Listers, like the Justice League does.

I enjoyed it. Wasn't great to me, but not everything has to be a classic even though I want them to be. I thought they explained the magical elements pretty well. I don't watch many Horror movies, so I could be off base with it, but I didn't see many Horror elements in this film like how they claimed it was going to be.

My only issue with the movie was some of the CGI when involving the characters. It's really getting noticeable. Like MARVEL needs to step it up in that regard.

I got almost exactly what I wanted out of this film. As is my usual complaint with the Marvel films there was a little more humor than preferable but most of it worked.

Cumberbatch proved everyone of us that called for him in the roll years ago correct by bringing the PERFECT interpretation of Strange to the screen.

Another common complaint, not enough time with the villain, but it is not part of Marvel's proven winning formula so I was not expecting much of a change. It just feels like a little bigger of a let down when you have such an amazing actor as your villain who did great work with what he was given.

I can't wait to watch this again and to see him pop up in
[Show spoiler]Thor next year

Ok, just grabbed the first one I saw and found the tune I am thinking of. (there are other music cues that sounded very similar, but this is the main one)

about 42:15 in this:
Compare to this at about 5:05 or so (not sure if its considered the main theme, but the tune does pop up several times in different tracks of the score):
Different instrumentation and such, but very similar. He wouldnt be the first composer to recycle his own work. Same thing Zimmer did with Drop Zone/Gladiator/Pirates of the Caribbean

Now the poll is up I've had a think about what to rate it. After my initial viewing I gave it a 4, but having seen it twice more after that I'm gonna have to raise it to a 5 (rounded up from just over 4.5). I've been liking it more each time I've watched it and 4 seemed too low, so 5 it is.

IA there are definite similarities with the DS soundtrack as Giacchino's work for Star Trek, but I love his scores for that series, so I don't mind hearing some of it on this soundtrack as well. And as for the track you've linked above, I'd say from about 3:15 there's also a familiar swell used in ST. But all this is doing is making me get out my STID Deluxe Edition to listen to until the CD for DS is released on the 18th.

I agree. I love the music for both, just pointing out similarities. Just like I love all the Zimmer scores I mentioned above, even if he shamelessly reuses or adapts his stuff.

Well, composers do have similarities between scores sometimes. I just found them both distinct. Michael Giacchino is pretty much my favorite composer out there and the music for Doctor Strange is certainly fun and creative.

Don't get me wrong, I find the score for DS distinct as well for the most part, but being that I've listened to his ST ones quite a lot, it was very easy to pick up on the similarities, too. He's one of my favourites as well, back from when he was doing great work on Alias, Lost, and my personal favourite of JJ's shows, Fringe.

Regarding the box office, it seems like it's off to a good start in North America so far:

‘Doctor Strange’ Conjures $9.4 Million on Thursday Night
Quote:
The Marvel film opened ahead of Thursday night numbers for “X-Men: Apocalypse” ($8.2 million) and “Thor: the Dark World” ($7.1 million).

“Doctor Strange,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, has been forecast to open to at least $70 million for the weekend as it debuts across 3,882 locations in the U.S. That’s higher than the openings of three other Marvel titles that introduced a character — “Ant-Man” ($57.2 million), “Thor” ($65.7 million), and “Captain America: The First Avenger” ($65 million). It also will probably top the $70 million taken in by the Bond film “Spectre,” starring Daniel Craig, which opened on the same weekend a year ago.

I heard that in the movie an thought of the similarities, I've no real grief, because I adore James Horner's work which I consider thematically similar all through-out his career, y'know I can hear "The Search For Spock" in "The Amazing Spiderman" as an instance..

no one is as "borrowing" as Steve Jablonski, he does nothing to cover up or even redress what he borrows haha

I sadly didn't really like this. I was pretty bored throughout which is a shame since I've been wanting a MCU to be visually stunning like GOTG. 2.5/5

Caught a matinée showing, loved it! Easily one of my top fav Marvel films, I want more of Rachel McAdams and Tilda Swinton tho, their characters were my favourite

Common criticisms I'm hearing:

-Similar origin arc as Iron Man with the lead character being a self-centered arrogant jerk turning into a hero.
-Rushed training of Strange becoming a sorcerer.
-About 1/4 of the humor falls flat.
-Main villain is underdeveloped.

Common praises:

-Visual effects are amazing.
-Cumberbatch is perfectly cast as Strange.
-About 3/4 of the humor works.
-It's connected to the MCU!

Miss anything?
