He was really good in 'The Rum Diary', and 'Transcendence' later this year, should help prove that Depp can still act when given the chance. I'm hoping this would swing that way.

Transcendence looks, well, transcendent.

I guess I'd be okay with it as long as they have a decent script and director to reign him in a bit. Like some, I worry about this slump mode Depp's been in lately. I agree he's a good actor, but it has been a while since I've seen it.

I hope they pay him, and I hope he knocks it out of the park because he is capable for sure! I was somewhat of a Dr Strange fan as a kid, can't wait for this. Hopefully they don't dwell too much on the Origins, the animated one drags on forever if I recall correctly on his Origin.

Johnny Depp being Dr. Strange would be the one of the only few times I'd actually be excited to see a Depp movie!

JGL as Strange would be indeed strange.

Depends on the Depp we get. Flamboyantly weird Depp (Mad Hatter, Willy Wonka, Jack Sparrow, Tonto, Edward Scissorhands, Barnabas Collins, Sweeney Todd, Ichabod Crane, Ed Wood) would ruin the character and be nothing more than adding another Depp caricature to it. He'll ruin the legacy of Dr. Strange like he ruined Dark Shadows. And let's be honest...can any of use REALLY see him playing a comic book character as anything other than quirky?

Dr Strange requires more of a serious actor and not someone who is so readily known for being 'quirky'. Personally, I would much rather see Adrien Brody in the role.

I see where you are coming from. What about From Hell Depp?

Really? You're putting Ed Wood and Willy Wonka on the same level, though?

I'd rather Secret Window or Nick of Time Depp.

And I'm not saying Ed Wood or Willy Wonka was a better/worse film or character than the other, I'm simply comparing the characters and Ed Wood was a very over the top character like Wonka. Depp excells at playing over the top. Yes, Ed Wood was quirky and eccentric in real life, but the reason he was so GOOD at playing him is because Ed Wood is a real life Johnny Depp caricature.

Dr Strange needs to be played straight, IMHO. And you need someone who can exude natural arrogance and confidence to play a pre-auto accident neurosurgeon Strange, and then that vulnerability of the transformation without losing all the confidence despite new-found humility.

I simply cannot see Depp pulling that off, he is too used to playing the same character or eventually (within the film) devolving INTO that character. And there is a segment of the audience that expects him to be his normal eccentric hero archetype, and if he were to NOT do that they wouldn't be happy with his performance.

It would be like casting Zooey Deschenal as his girlfriend, and then expecting her to be something other than a doe-eyed, quirky nerd-girl who completes every sentence in questions, and ask every question flatly--it simply can't be done.

My absolute top pick for Dr. Strange would be Pierce Brosnan.

I like the Viggo idea, but he seems to have moved away from popular fare.
If they want to go a little younger (though they shouldn't) Michael Fassbender would've been good, but he already has the Magneto thing going on. someone like Ewan McGregor maybe? I'm sure I will think of some other names and post them here later.
Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Strange ? That would be a great if he got the role ! . Do you think that he might one of the actors that they are currently trying to decide on for the role of Doctor Strange ?

Didn't know Depp had a possible multi-film deal with Lionsgate.

Wonder if he'd be available to do Doctor Strange.
