True, but Denis Villeneuve ain't Marvel. I love his movies, but his highest gross to date is from Prisoners, at $61 million. Arrival looks good, but even with a hefty drop, Strange should dominate till Fantastic Beasts hits.

Arrival also only has a 2200 theatre count, so that'll affect its ability to challenge DS full on. Will be interesting to see how it does though, I might check it out later at some point.

[Show spoiler]Exactly. Because they had show it enough so Dormammu reaches the point where he's willing to bargain as well. Seeing him give up too quickly wouldn't have the same impact.

I just wish they would place some of the humor in better spots. Every so often they have a humorous scene right after a dramatic one that kind of takes away from it.

Agree completely. The MCU's success is definitely founded in being able to make these movies lighthearted with heroes who are likeable/have heart. Basically the Joss Whedon school of writing: "Make it dark, make it grim, make it tough, but then, for the love of God, tell a joke." Doesn't land for everyone and sometimes it seems like the jokes cut the tension in ways that don't serve the story. But I've been a fan up to this point.

[Show spoiler]Aside from the confrontation with Dormammu, which I felt was kinda silly (Strange basically annoys him into giving up)

, pretty much everything else was perfect. Also loved how much the Cloak of Levitation was basically the Magic Carpet from Aladdin. Really fun movie, haven't been this hyped for a Marvel sequel in a while.
He didn't
[Show spoiler]"annoy him into giving up." Strange effectively made one of the most powerful beings in the universe his prisoner. Strange made an unbreakable time loop which would have prevented Dormamu from ever doing anything again.

Arrival won't make anywhere near the money that an MCU movie will rake in but I'm sure it'll do just fine in terms of being a Denis Villevenue release. It seems to be more "mainstream" compared to his past movies.

[Show spoiler]Mordo starting to hunt down sorcerers who waste magic or break the laws, starting with Benjamin Bratt's character.

[Show spoiler]The after credits was Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor's character) taking away the former disabled guy, who told Strange about the Nepal temple, power away. Then he claims there is too much sorcerers. Seems like a setup for him to be the villain.

Had a Good News, Bad News situation seeing this today. The Bad News: I did not see this in IMAX like I was hoping to. The friend I saw it with suffers from vision problems and unfortunately, she can't see 3D movies well. The last time that happened, she kept on asking what was happening on screen, so we went with a 2D screening that was a little bit later than our original showing.

Trailers I got were Rogue One, Logan and GOTG Vol. 2. Now for the Good News:

GODDAMN THIS MOVIE WAS A F***ING BLAST! Christ, I haven't enjoyed an MCU movie like this in what feels like eons. I always felt out of all of the MCU films, THOR was my favorite as far as the movies go but I can safely say this tops that. As far as I'm concerned, this and Jessica Jones are top dog for the cream of crop in this franchise. Everything about this worked so well: The casting, visual effects, action, characters, world building, pacing, score - It clicked with amazing efficiency. Another thing I greatly appreciated about this MCU movie over the others is how vulnerable Strange. He felt to me more of a chewtoy in this one than the other protagonists in this series; He's always seen with some degree of brusing on his face or being outmatched but refusing to give up, which I quite liked.
[Show spoiler]Plus I liked how he was both willing to let himself die over and over again to defeat Dormammu and despite his magical abilities, let his hands continue to shake. It's a good character development.

I do have some minor quibbles: Kaecilius, though a solid villain imo. could have used a few more scenes to flesh him out. I liked his character and motivations but I wish we could have spent a little more time with him (plus, the prequel comic goes into more detail about his past and makes him seem much more sympathetic than what we see on film). And I could have gone with the movie playing itself a little straighter. Nothing wrong with well timed humor but I think downplaying some of it could have worked just as well.

But yeah, I freaking loved this. Not just a great Superhero movie, but an all around terrific movie and an awesome way to spend an evening at the movies.

3 out 5 stars for me.

Great cast, great effects, but damn that forced humor!

I'd say half of the humor works and half of it doesn't. The problem to me is that this movie should have been played darker and more seriously than most, if not all, of the other Marvel movies, but every time they started to go towards that, they made another joke. What worked well for Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man did not work for Doctor Strange, just as it did not work for Thor: Dark World. It got downright silly at times. I'd say it ranks somewhere in the middle of the MCU movie list, after Guardians, Avengers 1, Iron Man 1, the Cap trilogy, Thor 1 and Ant-Man. IMO. I liked it, but did not love it.
