Origin stories are boring. Everyone knows who these characters are and why they are the way they are, they should just dump them into the plot like Batman and Wonder Woman in BvS.

I, and MANY others, knee NOTHING about Dr. Strange. Just dumping him in without the story to establish HIS universe would be a damn shameful waste as most audience members would reject him as some fantastical being who just came out of nowhere. In the MCU, that kind of DEUS EX MACHINA character would be going too far for mass acceptance.

The DCEU is just getting started, so I don't mind a few origin stories in that series. They have to pick their spots though. Batman clearly didn't need one since it had already been done once by Nolan and sort of prior to that by Burton. Wonder Woman on the other hand had never appeared in a live action film before BvS, so it doesn't hurt to give her an entire movie devoted to her backstory.

Doctor Strange just felt too paint by numbers. Far too many similarities to Iron Man(rich, snobby, arrogant a-hole has to overcome a physical disability sustained in an accident).

Yeah because that worked so well as a coherent and well structured story.

Not to mention, people know Batman VERY well and know Wonder Woman enough to accept her randomly appearing in a film.

The general audience doesn't know s*** about Doctor Strange so showing his origin is a good thing.

I smirked at every leaked photo of the costume, but Dr. Strange looked pimp in the actual movie. I knew nothing about the character going in but I had a great time.

Still, 95% of the movie takes place on Earth, in our own dimension. I hope they exlpore a bit more in the future.

But wouldn't a short flashback do? Watchmen weren't extremely well known, but we all knew who they all were and how they became who they were after one (very long, but good) film. Plus there was a story for that film that rolled forward the whole time as well.

I think the best part of the shooting pictures was them leaping around at nothing in NYC. Of course it looked amazing onscreen, but they looked like right prats without movie magic.

And speaking of Strange looking good, I'm not gonna lie, he was pretty hot in this. Marvel's training of their actors paid off well with him, I was totally digging him in the red uniform and his final blue one, and another highlight of seeing this in IMAX is the extra picture visible during the shirtless shot, just fyi.

But count me in with enjoying the origin story; for obscure characters like him it's definitely needed, especially since it's the introduction of this kind of magic and other dimensions into the MCU. You don't want to rush that kind of thing, and he doesn't have a bunch of movies already about him like Batman or Spider-man do, so they had to set him up right.

I'm willing to bet a lot of people who see these films don't read comic books so theyd have no idea who lessor known characters like Doctor Strange are. Origin stories are perfectly fine & establish the character going forward. Your way would just have a random "magic dude" show up in something like Avengers without any explanation of who he is or how he can do what he does. That doesn't work very well in movies.

I'm obviously the odd one out, because I feel that "meet joe, joe has an accident, some bad guy rises up, joes realises he has the power to take out bad guy" over and over and over again doesn't work well in movies, but the box office disagrees with me so, whatever. Keep on making them.

I enjoyed the movie very much. The visuals were amazing, plenty of humour, Benedict was great and I liked the chem between Dr.Strange & Christine.

My only 'nitpick' would be that I wanted the movie to be 10-20 mins longer.

[Show spoiler]I stayed til the end credits where it showed Dr.Strange/Thor. Was there another one after it?

Yes. There is another stinger after all of the credits.

His cape is essentially the Marvel equivalent of Aladdins magic carpet. It was too silly for my taste. Think I was generous with a 2.5/5 rating.

You are definitely not alone on this. Why should we have to sit through 60 mins of an origin story just because the guy sitting next to me hasn't read a comic. His problem not mine. Do some research. Dropping a quick sequence mid film is enough to bring you up to speed. That was my only gripe with Bat V Sup. The flashbacks. We all know how Batman got his powers after being bitten by a super bat. Move along now.

I believe it was a radioactive bat. You're getting him confused with the super spider that shot Peter Parker's parents, but point well taken.

I enjoyed this movie twice now. The 3d did nothing for me. Yes it seemed there was aspect ratio changes but it seeing it in a regal imax 3d screen didn't do it justice.

[Show spoiler] The scenes with the cap pulling seemed a little over the top.
In the end as Strange stood there by the window alone, you just kinda felt sorry for him as it seems like he will never be a real Doctor anymore and has to live his new life.

Honestly, until the end of the movie I thought they were talking about Thanos the entire time and not the other guy.

Wong was hilarious. But honestly he should not have said "Infinity Stone". I like for the audience to have to "guess" what it is...

It does make you wonder how many cross over the movies are going to have in the future IF Strange is going to appear in Thor 3? I was fine with Hulk in Thor 3...but I am sure his appearance will be no more than 10-15 mins.
