Saw it yesterday (IMAX) and was just blown away by the 3D. I've never been a fan of 3D and usually avoid it. The movie itself was great. Almost perfect. 9/10 from me. My fave Marvel movie since C.A. T.W.S.

Same. This was the most excited I'd been for a Marvel film. Unfortunately, it just felt flat to me. The writing was poor, lots of cheesy scenes, and terrible villains. Tilda Swinton was the highlight of the movie for me.

My favourite part of the whole movie was the
[Show spoiler]apple.

It's such a small thing and actually feels really hokey and dated. But for some reason, that felt the most magical of all, aside from the different dimensions. It was such an "old" moment. If they made this movie years ago, that's something they still might try and it would be the same. When that happened, I thought, "crap, they're trusting the audience to be in to this." That small little moment went such a long way for me.

Short review:

- Not familiar with the comics but I feel as if Cumberbatch perfectly embodies the character just as Downey Jr. fits Iron Man.

- The visuals were pretty good, especially the
[Show spoiler]5 min trippy sequence.
Saw it in 2D so can't comment on 3D/IMAX.

- The music wasn't at all memorable. It sounded like Giacchiono just remixed parts of the Star Trek score.

- Mikkelsen's talents were wasted. They might as well have saved some money and hired a no name actor. His character didn't give me enough of a reason (or I just didn't care) as to
[Show spoiler]why he wanted to do Dormammu's bidding

- Swinton was great as the ancient one though
[Show spoiler]her reveal of using the Dark dimension and eventual death was no surprise.

- I don't buy
[Show spoiler]Mordo "turning to the dark side" that easily in the post-credits scene. I can't buy that his character decides to ditch all their teachings after seeing how they violated the natural order and decide to just kill the dude who was healed.
Despite that, Ejiofor's acting was great.

- Despite running under 2 hours, the movie felt slow and also rushed at times. I think the training sequences could have benefitted from more time and we could really see Strange learn his craft well.

- The humor felt forced and didn't really do anything for me. It was out of place at times and undercut from the catharsis we should have felt with Strange's character undertaking this journey.

Overall, some strong performances and visuals but this movie felt like a generic superhero story reskinned with a magic flavour.

3/5

I might watch the animated one tonight. I remember it being really good, and I think it's actually pretty similar to the new MCU movie if I remember correctly.

Absolutely loved it. Mind blowing visuals, great characterization and acting, dialogues on point and a great finale with a strong villain (wish for more though).

Would normally give 9/10, but rounding up to 10.

[Show spoiler]Basically, until they can get back FF, the MCU has their Galactus with Dormammu)

The post-credits (and presumably the mid-credits) sequence was a flash-forward, think it's stated that some time has passed. I guess they'll flesh out that missing time and how that particular epiphany was reached in the sequel.

[Show spoiler]You're right, Mordo specifically says it's been months since the events of the end of the film.

Pretty much my same exact thoughts and rating. I'm in almost total agreement with every point you made, both positives and negatives.

I think Superhero fatigue is starting to set in for me. I'm excited for Guardians 2 but not as much for the rest of the MCU films. Of course, I say that now. I tell myself to wait for the trailers.

If it wasn't for the trippy visuals/FX don't know if I would have liked Doctor Strange as much as I thought I might. Still a good movie though.

1.
[Show spoiler]I don't think Mordo "ditched all his teachings". In his view, he's consistent. The Ancient One taught one thing, but unknown to her students actually used the power of the dark dimension. He's inflexible and refuses to admit that one can use the dark powers without being corrupted.

2.
[Show spoiler] I don't think he killed Benjamin Bratt's character at the end. He simply stripped him of his magical powers and thus he's paralyzed again.

And of course Ejiofor's acting was great. I've never seen him give a bad performance since I first saw him in Dirty Pretty Things.

This exchange was hilarious, and I think the best part of it is that it's been set up in the film with
[Show spoiler]TAO calling him Mister when they first meet (which he then corrects as Doctor and she's replies "Not any more." Harsh), and then it plays out after the Mister Doctor scene when he's killed the zealot and TAO then calls him Master Strange, to which he goes off about it saying that it's Doctor, not Mister or Master. Because both times previously with TAO and Kaecilious it was about his arrogance correcting everyone that's he's a doctor and then turns into a nice character moment when he says that he's a doctor not as a way to show off or put himself above others, but to reinforce who he still is, and that he's not a killer.

.
Correct on both counts.
[Show spoiler]Mordo's very rigid, he initially went to TAO to get the power to overcome his enemies but she taught him to defeat his demons. TAO kept her usage of power from the dark dimension secret, and Mordo adheres strictly to "keeping the natural law". Therefore using dark power, or using magic against the laws of nature is wrong to him. Pangborn was using magic to heal his body and circumvent nature, which is why he took it back and Pangborn reverted to his "natural" state of being disabled. Strange used the Eye to turn back time and undo what had already been done, thereby going against nature, which is why he left in the first place.
