The film was very good but I would of enjoyed it more if it focused more on showing us magic then turn it into "gotta save the world!" halfway through. If you split the film into two acts, the first act was my favorite with him learning. The villain was great for a basic villain though, we got his why and it made sense. Also while I love Rachel McAdams, I think they gave her character the perfect amount of screen time.

4/5

This is where it ranks for me:

Are you sure? At first i thought the same but there are about two scenes, i believe, where it lies on shoulders symmetrically.

I feel like the worst kind of nerd even talking about this haha

Yeah, it was made like that. You can see it floating by itself in a trailer shot here:

And in this picture, you can see there's a small point on the left shoulder that goes out and then back in, and it's not present on the other side. Any time it looks symmetrical it probably just wasn't sitting right. A lot of the official promo posters also show it with his left shoulder covered more, you just might not have thought to look at it until now. /also nerdy

Thanks. That's really interesting. I wonder what went into that decision because that seems very intentional.
It srill visually bothers me though haha

Well since I feel like procrastinating from work I actually looked it up and found this interview with the costume designer:

Quote:
Obviously, there’s a color palette within the comics. I think red and gold has an immense amount of baggage that isn’t particularly helpful to this film, so I decided to keep it basically monochrome so that the detail is all there. As you go more into closeup, you gain more from the cloak. The big challenge was the idea of asymmetry, whether that’s just me asking, “What can be different about this cloak?” It had a good feel to it. In order to achieve that, it has a semi-tailored shoulder on one side. That’s a whole new game that I had never tackled. I won’t call it a graveyard, but we certainly have a rail of prototypes, all of which taught us something. It really is about working with the fabric and the processes. Every time you add something else to the cloak, it changes the weight, the balance, and the behavior.

I think the design makes a fair amount of sense given the purpose of the cloak. It's almost like a gladiator's armor. It's more open on the right side, which for 95%+ of people would be their dominant or "sword" hand, and it's more closed off on the left, which would be the weak side or the shield hand.

Are we really having a conversation on a cloak being symmetrical or asymmetrical?
[Show spoiler]It moves on its own, it'll rest on him how ever it pleases!

Yes. Yes we are. And it's not like it's a morphing cloak, it doesn't change shape at will, it was made in a specific way. So its being asymmetrical isn't the cloak choosing to settle like that, it's how it was built.

I realize there aren't enough apologies I can make for seriously talking about this lol.

But it's clear some thought went into this design. It really stuck out to me and still does. They've changed the character a bit and this cloak is one more ingredient that was tweaked. I loved the movie. There were a lot of ways to approach this character so I'm definitely interested in these seemingly trivial details.

One small detail I really loved was Strange changing his hand gesture when using the
[Show spoiler]time manipulation
at the end. That's the kind of thing I was actually hoping would be more common but since it ended up being a one time thing it got me giddy.

Well I think it's interesting, and the cloak was an awesome character and design, so I don't see what's wrong with talking about it. This is the internet and it's a comic book film, isn't analysing every tiny thing par for the course?

That's interesting. I didn't notice that in the movie. I thought when he wore it, he just folded it back over his shoulder. Obviosusly it was made to have freedom of movement of the right arm and hand. But the question is, if it was made like that, what if the wearer was left-handed?

It only chooses right-handers. Lefties need not apply.

My son's a lefty.

Here's a little fact I discovered not too long ago... The word "sinister" means "of, on, or toward the left-hand side" as well as "evil" so people in ancient times believed that left-handed people were evil. Also, the character Sinestro in the Green Lantern comics is not just evil, but left-handed.

I wonder how the sorcerers in the Marvel Universe would view lefties. Magic must have some rules regarding that.

Oh yeah, there's been tons of crap about left-handers and superstitions about it in the past (and pretty recently as well when a few decades ago they'd force left-handed children to write with their right hands and it messed them up). I have a lot of lefties in my family and they're all pretty creative, much more than my right handed self. And both Hawkeye and Black Widow are left-handed since the actors are in real life. Hawkeye shoots right-handed in Thor for his cameo but then Renner changed to left from The Avengers onward.

Maybe there's another cloak specifically for lefties kept in a different Sanctum? But I figure the real life reason is just that Cumberbatch is right-handed. It does make me wonder about the casting of spells though and if different hands would mean it alters the spell. Although I highly doubt they'd get into it at that level in the films, it's something to ponder nerdily.
