Marvel Begins Meetings For ‘Doctor Strange’ Director

Guardians of the Galaxy is well on its way to theaters, Avengers: Age of Ultron is now filming, and Ant-Man is almost fully cast. Next on the Marvel checklist is potential Phase Three film Doctor Strange. Now Kevin Feige‘s company has reportedly begun to take meetings with directors as they consider choices to helm the film. Read the list below.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, here are the directors who have met, or will soon meet, about possibly directing Doctor Strange:
  • Mark Andrews, co-writer and co-director of Brave
  • Nikolaj Arcel, director of A Royal Affair
  • Dean Israelite, director of Paramount’s delayed Welcome to Yesterday
  • Jonathan Levine, director of The Wackness and 50/50.

The report also says Kung Fu Panda writers Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger are in negotiations to rewrite the screenplay. Apparently, earlier drafts have struggled to mix the mystical sensibility of Strange in the more gritty, superhero reality of The Avengers.

Those four names are incredibly interesting, and once again bolster the fact Marvel is always looking to tap young talent (Favreau, Black, Russos, Taylor, Gunn, etc.). To me, the most intriguing names are Andrews and Levine, and that’s mostly because I haven’t seen Arcel’s latest, or Israelite’s first, film. Andrews came up through the Pixar system, so you know he’s incredibly focused on story. He’s also a big, big energy which works well with Marvel. As for Levine has demonstrated, time and time again, a great ability to blend genre and balance tones. His movies have been pretty great and he’s well overdue for a shot at the big time. Maybe Doctor Strange is it.

If meetings have begun, it seems like a good bet we’ll hear something by WonderCon in April or definitely Comic-Con in July. Once a director and screenwriter are set with a singular vision, they can go out to actors, which is what fans are even more curious about.

What are your thoughts on this list?

Out of those names I would pick Levine.

I would have to agree. I'm all for outside-the-box thinking and all, and I know they don't tend to go for big, known directors like Del Toro or somebody, but none of those choices instill any confidence in me.

Much like everyone has seemed to think about a lot of their choices, to be honest. Marvel's outside of the box thinking has set them apart, giving directors a chance to shine when other studios might not. Would you have picked the Russo Bros. to do an action film if all you knew was their TV work? I certainly wouldn't, but Marvel had confidence in them to do it. So I have to give them the benefit of the doubt that they know what they're doing. But there's probably also names that are being looked at that aren't on the list. We'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah...I thought that was weird as well. But i don't think they mean gritty in that sense. I think it just means they're having a hard time melding the far out style of Strange with what we saw in 'The Avengers'. Honestly, if they can make Thor work, they can make Strange work too.

I think "gritty" was just a poor choice of words. I think they meant more "grounded".

If I am not mistaken, I remember reading somewhere that The Avengers: Age of Ultron, is going to be darker and/or grittier then the first Avengers movie from 2012. I have a feeling that Doctor Strange will be the same way.

Honestly...That's an interesting choice. I feel like the obvious names are del Toro, who could visually make it mind blowing. He's aesthetic would fit the character. But, a more left field choice for me: Joe Cornish, the guy who directed 'Attack the Block'. I think he has what it takes to do the film.

Assuming they arent going to go for the most major big-name directors, I'd at least set up meetings with:

Drew Goddard (though I believe he is already working on some of Marvel's Netflix stuff - Daredevil, etc)
Terry Gilliam
Rupert Sanders (Snow White & the Huntsman)
Rian Johnson (Looper)

other possibilities:
Andres Muschietti (Mama)
The Spiereg brothers (Daybreakers)
Matt Reeves (Let Me In)
Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel) - yes I know his stuff so far is more comedic, but I like his visual style and would work well with Marvel
Doug Liman (Jumper was kind of a superhero movie)
Andrew Niccol
