Like Comicman said - this is one of those out of the box choices. It's where no one ever suggests a certain actor for a role, but once it's announced, you say "why didn't I think of that? He'd be great."

I would absolutely love to see Joaquim Phoenix as Dr Strange, but I too would be surprised in the sense that he doesn't strike me as the kind of actor who would like to be locked in a multi movie deal. But if it happens... Wow.

I remember some here saying in the 'Batman v Superman' thread that Phoenix should not take up 'Lex Luthor' because its 'Beneath' him. What happened to that?

I saw a picture of Phoenix with a goatee and he kind of does look Stephen Strange. Its freaky. I would prefer Leto getting the role though and Phoenix playing Dormammu!

Was he actually in the running for Lex or did they ask and he just said no thank you?

The story I heard was that he was approached, but said no due to scheduling issues.

From an interview with Kevin Feige:

Everyone signs on for multiple films; the 9 or 12 is more rare, usually 3 is more the norm.

(So if Phoenix is Strange, his contract could have him signed for anywhere from 3 - 12 films. Most likely the lower end.)

Feige also had this to say about the film:

“Strange” is about as classic an origin story as you get, and also more about left turn into supernatural. What is the definition of that? We like the idea of alternate dimensions. playing with perceptions of reality.

Doctor Strange Won't Be An Origin Story?

Back in June and July of 2013, Latino Review posted a couple of breakdowns regarding the Dr. Strange script that was written by Joshua Oppenheimer in 2010. Since then, Marvel has changed their Dr. Strange movie plans. They've recently hired Scott Derrickson ("Deliver Us From Evil") to direct it and hired screenwriter Jon Spaihts ("Prometheus") to work on the screenplay. Devin Faraci of Badass Digest appeared on Meet The Movie Press alongside Mark Reilly and Jeff Sneider. There, he revealed, Dr. Strange is not an origin story.

"So, for Dr. Strange they've had a script in-house forever. It is a pretty standard origin story for Doctor Strange. It's got Baron Mordo as the bad guy. That's all gone. Marvel's new thing is no more origin stories. So, Dr. Strange movie no longer has an origin. It begins in medias res. It has Dr. Strange already established as the Sorcerer Supreme. It is a totally new script. Jon Spaihts is working totally new, On his own, without any of the previous stuff. Not even touching the previous script." - Devin Faraci

That goes against what Feige said just over a month again, calling the film a "classic Marvel origin story". I think they're trying to leak bad info to the people who keep leaking early information on their films.

That's kind of lame, but I guess they can do 5 minute recap like The Incredible Hulk to get people caught up on things.

Yeah, even my post before that one had me quoting Kevin Feige:

I highly doubt Marvel would bring Strange, of all characters, to the screen with no explanation as to who he is and how he is the Sorcerer Supreme. I also doubt Marvel would definitively rule out all origin stories and say "no more origin stories." We're expected to believe that Captain Marvel, Inhumans, Black Panther, and more, won't get origin stories? Not buying it.
