Deadline reports that Phoenix is definitely out of the picture for Doctor Strange. We always wondered if the actor could really work with Marvel’s methods, and if he could fit in with the Comic Con promotional tricks that Marvel embraces. He never seemed like that guy, and so this news isn’t a surprise.

Perhaps its for the best. He could've been another Norton / Weaving situation.

I don't think many casting decisions have been made at this point. The main issue is getting someone cast in the main role first.

I think he would have probably been excellent, but I never in a million years saw him doing more than one film. Perhaps as much as two -if- Marvel could have found a really really good angle (for him), for which he would probably have requested the right to bow out (for the second movie) if he didn't like the script.
If he ever considered this offer seriously, he was probably trying to convince Marvel to do 1 film, and maybe one quick apparition in one Avenger lineup, and be done with it.
Otoh Marvel probably wanted to sign him up for a minimum of 3 main line movies and 2-3 Avengers apparitions, even if not main billing.

Dont people realize that Dr Strange is not strange? There's no need to think of strange actors to play him like Phoenix or Depp.

Dr. Strange from the comic always seemed to be a more vanilla version of Tony Stark. Even Downey Jr. would make a good Dr. Strange. But as Hemsworth and Evans have done with Thor and Capt. - making their movie versions more interesting and likable than their comic book version - I still hope they cast an interesting actor to play Dr. Strange. I wouldnt be surprised if they pick one of those British "it" actors who are getting a lot of work now, like the dude who's playing Dracula in Dracula Reborn.

That Crazy Old Wizard Ewan McGregor Is In The Running For Doctor Strange

It's rumor time!

With Joaquin Phoenix out of the running for Doctor Strange Marvel has had to go back to the drawing board to figure out who will headline their next big franchise. They have their director, they're getting their script together, they just need their star. So who is it gonna be?

Yesterday a new source contacted me and said that Ewan McGregor had been prepping for the role - doing the usual research actors do when looking at taking on an adaptation or existing character. I contacted one of my usual sources and asked if this was true, and I was told "They're looking at him."

Looking at him! That's sort of vague, I'll admit it, but with the casting starting over again this at least tells us what direction Marvel is taking the character. I was kind of hoping that with Phoenix out they might go alternative - a black actor, perhaps - but they're hitting white and middle aged (Phoenix is 39, McGregor is 43).

What do you think? Should Marvel keep 'looking at' Ewan McGregor? Before you talk about his looks, check out this picture of Ewan made over for his role in Jane Got A Gun:

At this point, I'm tired of hearing who's in the running. When they lock someone down, I'll be happy. I was on board for Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto, Jack Huston, etc. Now, it's just spinning wheels, until we know for sure.
