Tilda Swinton in Talks to Join Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' (Exclusive)

Tilda Swinton is on her way to the Marvel Universe.

The actress is in negotiations to join Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange, being directed by Scott Derrickson.

Strange is Marvel’s supernatural hero, a formerly cocky surgeon who loses the use of his hands, and while on a last ditch attempt to heal himself, discovers magic.

Strange’s mentor is a Tibetan mystic known as the Ancient One, who is training pupils to be the next sorcerer supreme. In the comics, the character has been a male, and Marvel Studios initially was searching for a male actor.

But the studio rethought the role and has now made it female. If a deal makes, Swinton will play the Ancient One.

I'm pretty sure some of you might not agree with me on this but I'm not so pleased with the news that Tilda is in talks to play The Ancient One. Now, I've never read the comics but based on what I've heard, The Ancient One is of Asian descent. Why can't Marvel ever hire an Asian actor, especially for a juicy role like this one. They already pissed me off with the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 when they had Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce as the villains in that film. I though Chow Yun Fat could of been an excellent Mandarin, but I digress. Back to the Ancient One, yet again Hollywood is white washing really good roles that were meant for Asians and giving it to white actors, just like the upcoming Bradley Cooper film Aloha. I mean, come on, Emma Stone playing a character with the last name Ng. Now, I have no issue with Michael B Jordan playing one of the Fantastic Four or Michael Clarke Duncan playing Kingpin or Lawrence Fishburne playing Perry White or Idris Elba as Heimdall because there aren't enough meaty and juicy roles for minority actors, so when a minority actor gets casts in a role that was meant for a white actor, I'm fine with that. If that's racist, I'm sorry but there really aren't enough good roles, leading or supporting, for minority actors. I think black actors have made some progress but Asians are still far behind, IMHO. There are very few 'great' roles made for Asian actors and they white wash it, I get kinda pissed. Kinda like Scarlett Johannessan in Ghost in the Shell. I understand it from Hollywood's point of view that they're afraid that the movie might not sell as well if they see unknown or not famous enough Asian actors in those roles but come on, the year is 2015 and if the Fast and Furious films can succeed with such diverse casting, then I don't see why Marvel films can't do the same either. Again, I know some of you might disagree with me on this but this is my two cents.

With this movie whatever decision Marvel would have made it wouldn't matter because the sensitive, attention seeking Social Justice Warrior brigade would have cried bloody murder anyways.

They cast an asian actor. "Oh noes, that's racist. It's a stereotype to have an asian teaching some mystical sorcery."

They cast Tilda. You'll get your people crying that Marvel is "white washing".

If they don't want to get raked over the coals they might as well not include Dr. Strange's servant. He was also asian in the comics and to have an asian or any other race/skin color that isn't white be a servant would be considered racist by the SJWs. Or sexist if they decide to make that character a woman.

Not a fan of that casting if its true.

I was quite excited for the rumors of Freeman, Nighy or Watanabe.

I think your frustration is misplaced in this case. Progress in diversity on the big screen won't happen over night. The fact they're changing a wise old man to a wise old woman is still a step in the right direction. It might not be the direction you'd prefer, but they didn't choose an old white guy. As Hellrasierfan mentioned, there's still an opportunity to cast an asian as Wong, Doc's man servant.

It's something I'm admittedly not paying close attention to, but more asian actors on the big screen doesn't seem like something being completely ignored. We had the awesome Mako Mori character in Pacific Rim, played by Rinko Kikuchi. Albeit short, we saw Tony Jaa in Furious Seven who probably had the best scenes in that movie imo.

I never would have guessed Swinton would be a serious contender for the role of the ancient one, so this is definitely not a typical or uninspired choice.

Hahaha.

spectre08, you do realize that SJWs are the ones that are doing it for attention and cry over everything, once again, for attention right?

They are not true feminists or people who truly believe in equality, they are fakes. I'm not making fun of or trashing true feminists or mature adults who actually do things physically or financially towards equality. SJWs is the name given to the ridiculous people here and there on Twitter or Tumblr that make a big stink over Everything because it makes them feel good for shitting on others.

When people like you lump SJWs in with actual feminists and the like, that's a huge slap in the face to the latter.

I understand that diversity casting isn't going to happen overnight. But I just hoped Marvel would have the balls to finally give an Asian actor a chance to play a Marvel character that was meant to be Asian. Now, I'm partly biased because I'm Asian as well and I have an Asian friend who is a struggling actor and I know how difficult it is for him to book roles in the media, be it film, television or in a play.

But nevertheless, I love the Marvel films regardless but it would be nice to see a diverse set of characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The only Asian characters that I can think of in the MCU are Hogun from Thor and some Asian doctor in Iron Man 3. I exclude Ming Na in Agents of Shield because that's on television and not in the MCU.

I have nothing against Tilda. Hell, she might make an incredible Ancient One. And by making the Ancient One female, I have no issue with. It's the race of the character that bothers me. Again, I know some or most might disagree with me on this but I think Marvel has plenty of white female characters in the MCU, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johanneson, Natalie Portman, Haley Atwell, Cobie Smolders, Liv Tyler, Rebeca Hall, Jaime Alexander, Evangeline Lilly, etc. Again, don't get me wrong, I still love what those above actresses have brought to the MCU but I just kinda wish they'd branch out more with diverse casting. And by adding Tilda to the MCU, it's not really giving Asian actors a chance to really shine in the MCU, especially when the character was written as a character of Asian descent. Again, that's how I feel. You don't have to agree with me or anything but I wish not just in the MCU, but Hollywood would do more color blind casting. At least, they're making some progress in television, IMO.

John Lone, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Ken Watanabe were busy so they got Tilda instead. Makes sense.

Why do I get the feeling the same people who are saying the Ancient One needs to be an Asian male were complaining over the casting of black men playing the Human Torch and Heimdall?

Race and gender should not matter in casting, quality of performance should. Wait and see. If the performance stinks, then criticism is valid.

I like the idea of TS, but it's hilarious how much Hollywood hates Asian males. This is simply a fact. You KNOW Marvel could probably even get Chow Yun-Fat if they wanted.

Tilda has that otherworldly look that would fit the character.

Remember when she played an angel in Constantine?

Wait, I thought that the whole "SJW" was a word made up to make fun of the trolls? Mocking them basically, at least that's what my wife says who gets annoyed when I use the term. If it came before and was used by people actually fighting for civil rights then I will stop using it and go with troll instead. I didn't hear that exact phrase or label until the last year or so.

To get back on topic I hope Tilda gets the role.
