DOCTOR STRANGE to be “Marvel’s FANTASIA” Says Cinematographer Ben Davis

Quote:
DOCTOR STRANGE to be “Marvel’s FANTASIA” Says Cinematographer Ben Davis

BY DAVE TRUMBORE

Marvel’s Doctor Strange is currently in pre-production since its November 4, 2016 release date is well over a year away, but cinematographer Ben Davis is talking about the film’s visual style right now. Director Scott Derrickson’s take on the Sorcerer Supreme, aka Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), appears to be going in a somewhat surreal and fantastic direction if Davis’ comments on the film’s palette are any indication. That should come as a relief to fans of the comic book since it’s in lockstep with the medium’s appearance and story.

As ScreenDaily reports, Davis, who was also the cinematographer on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron, spoke about his next superhero film during the BAFTA Masterclass in London. He briefly described how the look of Doctor Strange will differ from previous movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and revealed his take on it:

“It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it’s not your typical Marvel action movie … Most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.”

There’s a lot to chew on in those few sentences even if it has little to do with the film’s actual plot. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the words “psychedelic” and “grounding” used to modify each other like that, but it’s good to know the mystical, magical Marvel movie won’t be sticking to “grounded realism.” But with all that surrealism floating across the screen, there’s sure to be a fair amount of CG work in play, which Davis addresses as follows:

“There’s a lot of previsualisation, and there’s a lot of work which is very hard – you look at it and you see the imagery that they’ve created for it and you think, ‘Well how the hell do we shoot that!?’ because it’s all sort of Escher stuff.

OK he might have just won me over with the “Escher stuff” quote before I’ve even seen anything from the movie. It sounds like a fantastic sandbox to get to play in, and that Davis is up to the task. He closed out his comments by talking about just how dark the palette of the film will be:

“It’s all very out there. I can’t really say much more about it, I’m afraid. But I think it’ll be really interesting, and it’s a very dark movie, I’m pleased to say … DP’s always love the word ‘dark’. The trouble is that most producers don’t like dark. Mostly you get into DI [Digital Intermediate process] and people don’t seem to like dark anymore!”

Producers might not like it, but I’m sure a dark tone is exactly what this movie calls for, especially considering the plot centers around a gifted but arrogant neurosurgeon who loses use of his hands after a car accident. Not exactly a light-hearted, fun-filled tale. So far, so good for Marvel’s Silver Age hero.

I am very interested in this movie. It has the potential to be very different from other marvel movies we've seen.

I agree. There's an opportunity here to really branch out and try something bold and different. Hopefully they're going to capitalize on it.

Every piece of news about this film has been good news. This visual description is right on point. If this takes me back to the visuals of gene colan I will worship the film. Strange still isn't on people's radar, but by the Vishanti he will be.

D23 2015: DOCTOR STRANGE COSTUME CONCEPT, ORIGIN REVEALED

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/08/...paign=Blogroll

[Show spoiler]
Quote:
At today's D23 Expo, during Disney's live action movies panel, Marvel Studios president revealed new details about their Phase 3 movies, beginning with Doctor Strange. The movie doesn't start filming until November, but is in pre-production now.

Feige introduced Benedict Cumberbatch, the actor tapped to play Strange, who delivered a pre-recorded video message. Cumberbatch is in London doing Hamlet onstage, so could not attend the event. In the video message, he said Strange would be about "Girls, cars, astral projection. The usual fare," and mentioned what an awesome challenge it is to play the role.

The D23 Expo crowd was then treated to a concept art sizzle reel (the footage is not yet available to anyone outside the D23 Expo). It showed Strange in a both the red cloak and a more tradition outfit, but with muted colors. Another bit of concept art showed him in an outfit similar to a trench coat.

The concept art of Baron Mordo showed him in gray and black tones. According to the concept art, he will have the trademark gray temples and goatee.

Although Tilda Swinton has said she hasn't decided whether to play the Ancient One as man or woman, she appeared to be a woman in the wide angle concept shot shown near the end of the footage.

The sizzle reel is narrated by director Scott Derrickson. In it, he confirmed that the origin from the comics would be the backbone of this story. In the comics, Stephen Strange is a brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon who suffers an accident that damages his hands, causing him to lose everything and search the world for a cure for his broken, trembling hands. His journey leads him to discover the Ancient One, who teaches him the mystic arts.

I just realized something. Since they got back the rights to Ghost Rider, I'm sure they also now have the rights to the Mephisto character. I wonder if we might catch a glimpse of him in this movie or perhaps during the end credits sequence? I think that would be a great way to introduce him.

sounds like they're trying to sell Dr. Strange to the layman as Tony Stark with magic. All the other descriptions of concepts, etc. so far sound promising, especially the cast.

Iirc mephisto first showed up in silver surfer so he may be under the ff cinematic rights. Even though Mephisto would be great, i'd prefer Strange deal with villains like nightmare, dormamu, and umar before taking on mephisto. That's just personal preference though. I could imagine a cool team up in the mcu between loki and mephisto.

He's not part of th Fantastic Four rights, he's with Ghost Rider -although they never outright call him Mephisto, but rather "Mephistopholes", IIRC. So there's a chance Marvel has retained the rights to use him all along.

I think he would make an excellent villain if done properly. It would be awesome to see him take on Doctor Strange, but I'd rather they save him for someone like Hellstorm, or even Man-Thing if they ever get around to those characters entering the MCU.

They've been hinting at Man-Thing for so long, I think his chances of showing up at some point before the end of Phase 3 are fair. Maybe even in Doctor Strange, after all they do share an inter-dimensional connection with the Nexus.

Interesting. I would be shocked if we ever saw the son of satan on the big screen. Just seems like a character whose very existence crosses a line I imagine disney wants to avoid. Maybe, just maybe, he could show up on the small screen though. I hope I'm completely wrong.

Fingers crossed that Tilda Swinton plays The Ancient One as a man.

Not because I care if they gender swap that role, but because Tilda Swinton in drag sounds fabulous.

Comparing a Disney/Marvel movie to a Disney movie? Reminds me of the trailer song for Age of Ultron cross-promotion.

‘Doctor Strange’ Eyes ‘Hannibal’ Star Mads Mikkelsen to Play Villain (EXCLUSIVE)

“Hannibal” star Mads Mikkelsen is in early talks to play one of the villains in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, Variety has learned exclusively. While sources say no offer has been delivered, one is expected shortly. Marvel had no comment on Mikkelsen’s involvement.

Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor are on board to co-star. Scott Derrickson is directing the comic book movie from a script by Jon Spaihts. Marvel’s Kevin Feige will produce.

Cumberbatch will play Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Marvel Comics artist Steve Ditko created the character in 1963. Swinton will play Strange’s mentor, The Ancient One, while Ejiofor will appear as Baron Mordo, who also studies magic under The Ancient One in the comic books, before becoming Doctor Strange’s nemesis.

Mikkelsen’s exact role remains under wraps, but sources say he will be another antagonist to Cumberbatch’s titular sorcerer.

“Doctor Strange” will debut on Nov. 4, 2016 with production set to start late this year.

Marvel has been interested in Mikkelsen for some time, at one point courting him for the villainous Malekith in “Thor: The Dark World,” until Mikkelsen won the role of the titular cannibal in NBC’s “Hannibal” and was no longer available. The Malekith role eventually went to Christopher Eccleston.

If accepted, this would be Mikkelsen’s second high-profile role in the wake of “Hannibal’s” cancellation — he’ll also appear in “Star Wars: Rogue One,” which will hit theaters on December 16, 2016. He is repped by UTA and Art Management.

I believe she has been cast already, which is yet more nonsense. Why couldn't they cast an actual Asian male for the role? maybe an actual aged Asian male, what's wrong with that? is that not diverse enough? so annoying.

Easily the best cast for a Marvel film.

I know she's been cast already. What hasn't been said yet though is whether the CHARACTER she portrays will be a man or a woman, which is what my post is about.

Tilda Swinton is hardly a "plug and play" woman they can just throw in for diversity's sake. If they chose her it was obviously a very deliberate decision based on a specific element they're trying to accomplish.

Excellent casting. Now don't waste his talent... I don't want a watered down one-off of a villain. I want him to have gravitas.
