The thing with Dr. Strange is that the character has the least comic book elements in his story of any in the Marvel universe. He is really an occult character who occasionally runs into superheroes. My guess is that a Hollywood version of Strange would have few typical comic book properties and would not look much different than the average paranormal character seen in popular entertainment. Think Constantine (the WB film) without a trench coat.

If marvel wants to succeed w/these lesser known characters….even Ant-Man….they are gonna have to do origin stories 1st.
They can’t expect the majority of the movie going public to watch an animated film to give them the details of the character prior to the live action movie. That’s why I said they’d have to slim the budget way down compared to the more well-known characters. If they can make the movie for $75 million and get $125 million out of it….then they can decide if a sequel is worth it w/a higher budget. |

See and that was a point I was trying to make. It wasn't advertised really. The only way you knew about it was if you just happened to see a an ad or you were on this site or something of that nature. You really didn't see lots of advertising for it.

![]() I understand your points, I personally think Doctor Strange is a hardcore fan character in general. If you ask people that haven't read lots of comics who Doctor Strange is they probably wouldn't know. All in all if a movie can get people into comics at all I'm for it. Kind of odd how being a "nerd" has gone from being so called dorky to cool now. Thanks to Hollywood movies and Big Bang Theory. ![]() |

Yeees! I'm not surprised, honestly, as I figured with the direction the series is headed in (more high fantasy/supernatural elements rather than just modern sci-fi) Dr. Strange would be a given for Phase 3. He's got such a fascinating origin story that would lend itself perfectly to film and set him apart from the others. My dream casting for him would be Jason Isaacs, but I don't know if Marvel will want a bigger name in the lead.
Has Marvel committed themselves to a certain number of installments per phase? I ask because if we're getting two origin stories in Phase 3 (Dr. Strange and Ant-Man), that may mean someone else isn't getting a sequel. I'm guessing if they'd give anyone a break, it'd be Iron Man since he's got 3 films under his belt, and Phase 3 would give Thor and Captain America a chance to catch up to him. I initially thought Phase 2 would have six films like Phase 1 did, but then Marvel threw a curveball and moved Ant-Man to Phase 3, something that surprised me as I figured that was a shoe-in for 2. So if Phase 3 has, say, 5 films ala Phase 2, then we'll probably be seeing: Ant-Man Dr. Strange Thor 3 Captain America 3 The Avengers 3 If they decide to do six ala Phase 1, then they'll probably throw in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I can't see them squeezing three new origins in one phase. |

Man, I'd love to see Marvel give Dr Strange to Don Coscarelli. For years the dude has put out slices of tasty genre on tiny budgets. Plus, he totally fits the Marvel mold in that he's made some creative underrated films that have large cult followings ala Shane Black, James Gunn, etc.

(Not that I have anything against Beastmaster 1, but Don's style tends to be a bit...odd when not dealing with silver spheres. And even when he is. Many a great big-budget flop has been created by giving "quirky" its big mainstream break--Sam Raimi was lucky with Spiderman, but he knew the character.) |

They didn't just pick Sam Raimi out of a lineup for his big-studio break; when we saw Darkman swinging from that helicopter over the city, we knew he had his Spiderman job application all ready. (And on that subject, one could say the same thing about James Gunn OR Josh Trank, but let's not officially heap praise until we see their mainstream comic-movie apprenticeships... ![]() Last edited by EricJ; 02-17-2013 at 07:08 PM. |
