So, where does Mikkelsen’s antagonist fit in, exactly? “Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect,” says the Marvel Studios boss. “[He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through.”

Although Broussard and Feige are happy to talk about the nature of Mikkelsen’s role, they are not, at present, revealing the actual name of his character. “I’ve seen lots of names thrown around,” says Broussard. “No one has quite picked the name that we’ve chosen for him. It would be fun to conceal that, if we can.”

So this confirms the Ancient One is being played as female, eh?

It was announced that it was being played BY a female, but it was actually ambiguous whether or not it was being played AS a female. Tilda Swinton commented on it as much at some point.

To be honest, there’s very little that I can tell you right now because there’s very little that I know yet. We haven’t really started working on it yet, but for sure there’s something interesting to me about being given this opportunity to play a character called the Ancient One, who, as we know in the comic books, is male. I have yet to decide exactly where I’m going to place the gender of this character. It’s not that I know and I’m not telling you -- I have yet to decide that. Presumably by the end of the year I will have worked it out. It’s a really interesting opportunity and I’m really grateful to Marvel for giving it to me because it’s going to be an interesting one.

Yeah, I was hoping they'd play The Ancient One as genderless. For an ancient being of immense power training the hero, it feels like it would've been more interesting as just a being, rather than a he or a she.

it's Tilda Swinton, so even if the "offical" word is that the Ancient One is a woman, it's entirely possible that we don't see anything on screen that actually gives that away.

yeah, the point is that the casting of Tilda Swinton alone doesn't necessarily mean that The Ancient One is a woman. She's played a man in the past.

That's what I was thinking way back when he was cast or rumored to be in it, but that article says he left the Ancient One to make up his own group or whatever. From what I remember in the comics, Dormammu has always been some kind of demon and not a human.

Oh I wasn't talking about him playing Dormammu as a human. Of course if he was that villain they would most likely do motion capture and voice work.

What I meant was, unless they make some fairly big sized changes from the comics, Dormammu never started out as a human. It sounds like Mads is playing a human since it says he left the Ancient One and I have a hard time believing the Ancient One trains and takes in demons and beasts.

This all has me excited though. As much as I enjoy MS films, I'm just expecting Mads to be a bit wasted as an actor since Marvel truly doesn't really put enough work into their villains. They are far too focused on their heroes in 90% of their films. That's not necessarily a bad thing but I'm a believer in the whole, a hero is only as good as his villain.

It's almost certain Mads is not Dormammu, given the quote:

I think it'd be best if he is not Dormammu; that's a character I think would be best used later. My wish is Mads would play Nightmare, but if they're saying no one has thrown around the right name yet, I'm thinking this might be a completely original character, which could be great.

If it is a character who has existed in the comics, they must be going obscure. The first possibility I thought of after reading that quote was maybe he'll play Silver Dagger. Although I didn't read the comics he was in, the description of the character Nicodemus West sounds possible.

Some other possibilities are Yandroth or Cyrus Black. Yandroth was a science/magic guy who actually prompted the creation of the original defenders which is kinda noteworthy.

No matter who Mads is, I'm excited as hell.

Benedict Cumberbatch basically IS Doctor Strange judging by the promo pictures. He looks perfect for the role.
