Still think that Benedict Cumberbatch is the man for STRANGE. With DelToro directing.

I hate Cumberbatch's goofy face, with his beady eyes and alien-shaped head.

I realize that the success of the the earlier movies allows them to make future movies with less well known characters. But I'm talking about not everything having to be a world-shaking tent-pole blockbuster that requires 200 million dollar budgets.

I'll feel a little gyped if we get only 2 movies in 2016 and one is Dr Strange. By making them all so expensive and 'special', i think they're setting themselves up up for a catastrophy if one flops.

If a 80-100 million dollar movie fails--well it happens and lots of movies aren't hits and we move on. If a 200 million dollar tent-pole flops--I can hears the critics...

I'm sure they won't spend $200 million dollars on a film if they could make it for $100 million. But times have moved on - only twenty years ago we were talking about the rare movies that broke $100 million in profit - now a billion dollars is the benchmark.

But I doubt they'll be throwing cash (relatively speaking) at secondary characters like DR STRANGE or ANT-MAN. They're certain to take a bath on one of these films and I'm sure they'll factor that in.

Marvel said they were going to make smaller budget films of someone of their not as well known characters. No reason to think they're going to spend so much on this film.

Yes, I read that a few years ago, but there is no indication that either of these movies will be the 'modest' budget they referred to then.

But I understand they're gonna be smart with their money---if they are smart. LOL.

My main point was.......

It would be nice in a lot of ways that that instead of two $200+ million dollar movies like we are getting from them in 2013---

I think it would be great to have three $130 million dollar movies of the 'lesser' characters---one in late spring/early summer, one in late summer and one in thanksgiving/Xmas season.

Dr Strange, Black Panther and Daredevil in one year would be great and it would give them time to really come up with quality sequels for IM, Thor, Cap and the other 'major' characters, assuming there will be more sequels of those franchises.

And if 1 of the 3 flopped well two out of three ain't bad and more characters would at least have gotten their shot.

Kevin Feige Says DOCTOR STRANGE Is “Next Up” for Marvel to Explore; Hints at Possible Phase Three Release

Quote:
During their interview, Steve asked Feige for an update on Doctor Strange and the Marvel Studios president said they are now actively developing the film:

“Dr. Strange is something that I talk about often and it’s sort of next up for us to dig into and explore. Our executive producer of Iron Man 3, having done Captain America: The First Avenger and as that was finishing he started working on the bones that would become Iron Man 3, and now that he’s finished with Iron Man 3, he’s working on the bones that would become Doctor Strange. Now that Iron Man 3 is finished, some of our quote-unquote spare time is going to be devoted to trying to crack Strange.”

While that’s certainly promising, Steve asked Feige what the timetable for a Doctor Strange movie could be, and the Marvel executive hinted at a possible Phase Three release:

“As we look past 2015, past Avengers 2 and Ant-Man, I think Dr. Strange should be one of the next movies in the years following that.”

If we use the schedule of Feige’s unnamed producer (who, looking at IMDb, might be Alan Fine), it was two years between the release of Captain America and Iron Man 3. With The Avengers 2 and Ant-Man already set for release in 2015, it’s not unreasonable to think that Doctor Strange could be the second film of Phase Three after Ant-Man, possibly seeing a spring 2016 release. Again, no solid date was confirmed by Feige and this all appears to hinge on whether Marvel can crack a story or unique take on the character, but Feige definitely seems to suggest that they’re hoping Doctor Strange can be part of the Phase Three plan.

Me too. People complain about all the "D" listers they are brining out, but to be honest, I didn't know much about Iron Man, Thor or Cap America, and I liked all of those movies, so I say bring 'em!

Completely agree with both of you. I love the MCU you, and I hope to see more to come from them for some time. There is so much to explore. The mystic realms, the supernatural side of the universe with Blade and Ghost Rider (Now that they're back home with the studio...), and the more seedy crime underworld stories of The Punisher and DareDevil. There's so much to see and do still in the MCU, so I can't wait to see what they do.

Agreed, nothing wrong with the D list characters; a lot of them are fascinating. Look how much can be done even with a character like Coulson!

There are lots of possibilities. I like the ideas people have of a Marvel Knights series of films that are either stand alone or have more to do with each other than connecting to the bigger story. They could do that with th more magical and mystical realms. It would be cool to have two big budget movies and one or two modest budget movies from Marvel a year.

According to Joblo:

According to CBM's source, DOCTOR STRANGE is being groomed to be the next "Iron Man," taking the lead as the character who binds not only the Earth-bound superheroes together, but also the intergalactic and interdimensional ones as well. Here's the source:

"What I can say is that Strange is being groomed to be the next Iron Man. The studio needs a new 'hub' character going into Phase 3 and beyond, as there is audience fatigue, aging stars and a need to move from Tony Stark/Iron Man as a 'hub' for films."

If Marvel is hoping that Doctor Strange is as popular as the Iron Man, they are going to seriously need a charismatic actor like Robert Downey Jr. Even Downey would have made a great Doctor Strange.

I'm sure many people are thinking Johnny Depp, but I'm pretty sick of him.
Daniel-Day Lewis would never do it.
Benicio Del Toro would have been a good Doctor Strange, but no one is going to flock to the theaters just to see Del Toro.
Viggo Mortenson would be good too, but once again, no one will flock to the theaters for him.

My favorite is Joaquin Phoenix since he is totally mesmerizing to watch, he's cuckoo, and he has looked good in his action scenes from Gladiator. I'm happy he's in movies again, but I also liked him in mainstream Hollywood flicks before he went cuckoo. Having him in the role also wouldn't have audiences flocking to the theaters to watch him, but it would be nice to see him in the role.

If they don't get an actor that audiences want to see (regardless of the type of movie), the movie will just be another Ghost Rider/Spawn. Doctor Strange just seems like he should be in a supporting role not a starring role - if there's a movie with a magician battling demons, that just sounds very 1990s. Even though Doctor Strange's main villain is Dormammu (an evil-looking Ghost Rider), a CGI-enhanced villain or CGI demon villains, these types of villains are just not that interesting anymore. I just don't know where they could go with Doctor Strange - his films would need serious Marvel superstars added in there to make the films epic or successful. Maybe they are thinking of doing a sort-of Defenders film? If they could get Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer, Namor, and Hulk in one movie, that would be pretty cool.

Back in 2007 people would have said exactly the same for Robert Downey Jr.

I'm not saying the same thing would happen - it was lightning in a bottle with him and Iron Man - but it was more of a case of matching actor with character that led to such success, rather than aiming for a current box office draw.

Well I'm all for Viggo - it would be awesome if he joined. What do you think about the magic/demon storylines though? What could a movie do differently with that already? The "hellish" alternate dimension has been played too much. With CGI now, they could go really visually creative and I hope they deal with more wacky dimensions in other galaxies.
