They need Blu-ray.com member gkolb to do the job right!
Sadly, I'm no longer the trim and svelte guy I was at 35, so it would be hard to make me look good in a tux now.

Just hand out the right dam card, dummies!

g , we’re all getting old…..nevertheless, being not one to age discriminate, I’m looking forward to the performances in The Irishman….

Maybe NBC LA will run the interview again as a retrospective.
The heck of it is, I read a bit about those two PWC bods on the BBC website on the day of the ceremony. They both seemed to be, not smug, but very full of themselves (as successful people are wont to be) and it just seems too delicious that it all unravelled like a slow-motion car crash on live TV.

I am pretty close. Been watching friends set and having watched a few films it won't be long until I make my move. Just waiting for standards to settle down a little. I struggle to get a grasp of all this technical stuff though.
I see the new Oppo is out soon as well. It has received excellent reviews. Nearly everything is in place.

By the way, I may ask sssistance from my good friends Penton Man and Geoff with some of the more technical details. As a pure consumer, I just want that end result of 4K goodness!

Geoff does all the grunt work on the TV, player threads.
I prefer to watch soccer (football).

^ Yesterday, my wife read this story - https://qz.com/923281/saint-francis-...dollar-payday/.....
and then asked me how come I missed the boat (parlaying $15,000 into 24-25 million dollars ) in getting in on that.

I told her that apparently I spend too much time reading things like this...
'Business perspectives on perceptually lossless and lossy quality (Invited), Scott Daly, Dolby Laboratories (United States)' and should pay more attention to what dem youngins are doing at school.

I want to get into 4K DVD's but am afraid they may not last or be a flash in the pan. The problem is that there is so little to choose from and I don't want to wait years for a lord of the rings, star wars, Friday the 13th, Halloween, andother boxed sets. They may never come.

Is 4K really going to last? Or will traditional Blu-ray continue to dominate?

No one knows, I'm just a firm believer of enjoying it while I can, or they invent something better!

They may not invent something better. After disc it's DRM'd-to-hell, highly compressed packages with lossy audio.

Get a UHD Blu-ray player (preferably one that will have Dolby Vision support) as they also support every other disc format (especially the universal players from Oppo and Sony for SA-CD and DVD-Audio high resolution format playback - though Sony has not stated whether DV support is upcoming).

Then get the titles you would like on UHD Blu-ray. If a movie you want never sees a 4k release, buy the regular Blu-ray.

Simple.

I get the streaming argument is great, but doom and gloom was there since 2005 or so when blu launched, so I'm kinda "whatever". So many people in this country can't stream worth a damn and still use redbox for DVD (not even blu). Disc isn't going anywhere and if 4K was the last big deal (doubt it personally), its still better than blu if you have the right setup.

I dont go to the theater anymore, and I think they have learned trying to force us to the cinema failed. Day and date full quality movies for $50 would be cool, Id spend that at the theater anyways. Id love to be able to watch 4K HDR Logan this weekend, and would gladly pay $50 for it. They need to branch out into all options. They already have UHD streaming, but the prices are stupid on Vudu, you can buy the discs after the theater run finishes, and then the people that want to save the most money can redbox with a delay. I want to see day and date next, because in that $50 or whatever, so of it can go back to the theaters. Other option, and this was discussed, offer a premium theater experience with food, tables, wine and beer, more "dinner and a movie" and enforce no phones and talking. You get that, Ill go back, but the current cinema experience (unless you are a rare bunch around a premium theater setup) is sub par compared to my home system, especially audio.

Only great if they let you rent the full DCP with cinema grade Atmos and your equipment can handle that, plus you have a viewing room sized projection screen.

I'm not paying $50 for Netflix quality video and audio.

Agreed. The tech is already there, Kaledscape has had full 1080p downloads with lossless audio (basically disc quality) for a few years, but the hardware price was stupid so they went broke. All you need is a simple device for rental and download, or even offer cloud ownership (from the studios themselves) where you could re download if you want. This would be great for people who want day and date movies and have good broadband.

They have so many revenue streams to tap into, the Studios are just friggin stubborn.

But is 4K truly the future or do you guys think BR will continue to be dominant for the next 10 years?

At CEDIA they had cinema media servers with DCP grade download rentals for subscribers, but the cost for everything was stupid expensive.

This is really for the 1%'ers.

Here is what is dumb. When I first used Vudu back in 2008, I had their BX100 box because my streaming sucked. Download HDX rental titles as a file, and then watch. I mean this was 2008!!! Box was like $299 and had a good size hard drive.

Is it possible that all Discs will be replaced with USB Stick versions ?
1. smaller.
2. more flexible as to where to watch.
3. Size of USB sticks doubles almost yearly. so no lack of space for future improvements.
4. Still DRM'd-to-hell. but aren't we used to that by now ?
5. Optical drives are becoming obsolete in Laptop & notebooks.
