Which ones coming out were not finished in 4K? I would think they would want to focus on 4K mastered titles. However, I am not surprise that some 2K mastered ones are also coming out... as there will still be some benefit from increased dynamic range, color, bit-rates, etc.
I would love to see Life of Pi get a 3D 4K Blu-ray. I hope with that and X-Men: Days of Future Past that they upgrade the 3D and not just the 2D. |

It was posted somewhere else on this forum that the MSRP for discs was going to be that high. Probably a false report so that's why I wanted to see if anyone else had heard the same thing.

Life of Pi, X-Men Days of Future Past, Kingsman Service Secrets and Wild, were shot in 2.8K with a master in 2k.
What's the point to release them in 4k seriously ? We want native 4k, not a *** upscale. |

I've brought this up before, if you look at the top 20 grossing movies of this year so far (in other words, every big blockbuster that is going to be a big selling title on home video) only ONE of them has a 4K master (Tomorrowland). There are more titles coming before year end with 4K masters that are big titles, but pretty much every tentpole movie of the summer was a 2K master. It actually seems like the bulk of the movies we are seeing with 4K masters are independent films or dramas, which typically don't get the flood gates open for new formats. If you're selling a new home video format, you're gonna push early on content that is full of spectacle (big budget tent pole movies) and right now those are almost always a 2K master with VERY little exception. |

Do you guys not understand that High Dynamic Range and Wide Color Gamut are much more important visual improvements of UHD-BR than mere pixel count?
All of the titles announced by Fox today will look superior on UHD-BR, regardless of whether they had a 2K DI or not. I suspect many of these Fox UHD-BRs will actually look superior to the cinema file that played in most commercial movie theaters. |

I don't know about that. The HDR and WCG are mostly inline with bringing the Home experience up to where it has been in the theater for quite some time. For instance they originally targeted REC2020 (which is greater then what is in the theater)for color gamut but seem to have settled on P3 (which is the current standard for the theater).

Also, HDR is what sets this apart, wide color gamut vs 709 will be paltry. No one was watching movies in the theaters and coming out going, "Man I wish I had P3 at home, did you see those colors!" The difference is fleeting unless you are comparing side by side, which no one ever does. Do I want it, ABSOLUTELY, but lets not make it out to be more than it is. HDR is the only big thing that most people's video playback systems would benefit from given that 99% of people are using flat panel displays that are less than 65" and they sit more than 8 feet back from them. |

"Examining the Effect of HDR
During one debate about whether there is a need to go beyond HD, it was suggested that a 4K display can offer the best possible HD pictures. However, actual comparison of the footage taken from a single ARRI Alexa camera and displayed on an HD HDR display and on a 4K display reveals that the HDR HD display provides apparently superior images." https://www.smpte.org/publications/i...chubin-HPA2014 |

It all depends on who's supporting what and when, I still find Sony's silence on UHD BD to be quite unsettling even though they're one of the key players in the BDA *and* they have the most 4K content by far. |

You know between the whole DVD to blu-ray thing and the whole SD to HD to FHD (480i to 1080i/720P to 1080P) you would think that studios would stop recording movies in whatever resolution is the thing of the moment and start actually looking forward. Why they are not looking towards 16K cameras and tech so that atleast in a year or two when the 8k stuff comes out they are ready for that and can be demoing the 16K stuff at CES instead of rolling out the same tired 2.8K alexa content with the same 2k DI transfers going look how much more 4K this not 4K stuff is. Oh well at least we have the 70MM stuff cause you know forward compatibility is a good thing. Guess thats why those are the classics they will be the only pieces of content that are still relevant in 5 years.
Soooo Frustrating T |

Not to mention the fact that for forum/audio video website regular readers, won’t all the upcoming Ultra HD Blu-ray vs. traditional Blu-ray movie comparisons done by early adopters be entertaining to peruse? ![]() I almost yearn for the screenshot scientists to make a reappearance. ![]() |
