Is there a better tactic than that?
Identify a source of banding that bothers you on your current setup. Explain your entire video chain in very specific detail. Then start asking around to see if anyone can check it on their system. Get as many opinions on as many displays as you can. Then you can narrow down your choices.

Theoretically, a true 10 bit display like many current HDR sets should have a lot less banding than an 8 bit one. But like I said before, certain sources and circumstances can still cause banding.

But all 2017 TV models and brands don't do 3D anymore. It's all HDR now, and some Visual Dolby. But 3-dimensional movie awesomeness experience is no more. Not in the 2017 models.

* Penton-Man, DanBa; what's the best TV for No-Banding? With or without HDR engaged.

Cheers,
As far as I understand, a Dolby Vision-compliant TV:

. 12-bit PQ-encoded content: no visible banding
https://www.smpte.org/sites/default/...-2-handout.pdf

. 10-bit panel rendering < 10-bit with dithering panel rendering < 12-bit panel rendering:
Using dynamic metadata, the Dolby Vision display adaptation of the Dolby Vision-compliant TV intelligently transforms the 12-bit signal to produce the best possible output on the target TV with a 10-bit / 10-bit with dithering / 12-bit panel.

According to this THR recap of a panel at the HPA Tech Retreat, networks want to do 1080p HDR when ATSC 3.0 hits: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...decision-97887

Even 1080p would be a bump over the very common 720p. Throw in hdr and we've got a nice treat.

Also, they say the goal for some is 1080pHDR with 60FPS with three current infrastructure in place.

Hmm now says:

Update: In the meantime, Warner has confirmed that the "Harry Potter" Ultra HD Blu-rays will support DolbyVision HDR in addition to HDR10.

John Archer article How The PS4, Xbox One And Even The Apple TV Could Soon Get Dolby Vision HDR

https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2017/02/24/how-the-ps4-xbox-one-and-even-the-apple-tv-could-soon-get-dolby-vision/

Quote:
Dolby has revealed that Dolby Vision is now available in a full software solution.

This means, in essence, that Dolby Vision could be added to almost any bit of AV kit - games consoles, set top boxes, TVs, Ultra HD Blu-ray players etc - that has enough processing power to handle the software implementation to Dolby’s satisfaction. As Dolby puts it:

“There are implementations that can run Dolby Vision in software, certainly in the console space but also in the TV SoC space. Specifics vary on a case-by-case basis depending on the hardware capability of the silicon in question, but we have development kits for various types of implementations, depending on the application: full hardware, hybrid of software and hardware or [and this is the crucial bit] full software.”

For that matter, even the not so cute (by most human perspectives) marine iguanas on Fernandina in the Galapagos Islands….

….long before their trials and tribulations became better known to the masses through the tremendous storytelling of the Planet Earth II series.

Me holding a thankful (surviving a shark encounter) marine iguana during my time on a diving expedition thru the Galapagos Islands waaay back in the day (e.g. original Oceanic Products aluminum housings for underwater work) as captured on Kodachrome film by a colleague from a dusted off archive motion picture just recently shown during a nostalgia night projecting celluloid experiences with friends….

P.S. The hoodie look above is because I was trying to warm up on a windy day after having just finished a long dive….although the islands are near the equator, the water is fairly cold and we didn’t have the luxury of dry suits back then.

I missed not having Charles’s normally scheduled kick off presentation at the HPA tech retreat this year which was starting to become the de facto opening for the event.

I’ve enjoyed his tweets for quite awhile because I feel they serve as a good reminder to folks that there are other, more important things going on in the world that they should be aware of and perhaps become actively involved in to protect our hard fought for rights and liberties, rather than casually living in a continuous state of complacency. If you scan his twitter feed, he’s also a fan of history, for which I should send him this video before I forget because with the exception of black boards, I already see history repeating itself….

Watch out Charles! If in the future you’re considering a university appointment somewhere….. next Professors could be labeled by a modern day authoritarian regime to be as dangerous as the free press.

Colorfront had a demo for HDR10PLUS at the HPA Tech Retreat though I haven't been able to find any articles about it.

The combination of a high data cost for 4K, the recent spectrum auction, and a long transition time for ATSC 3.0 does make it look very likely.
