Omg I thought I was the only one having problems, it completely locks up and won't play. All other 4k's work, was thinking of exchanging the disk.

I'm seeing the same thing here in my XBOne S with Oblivion. I had no problems with it using my Samsung UHD BD player.

Tonight I watched Oblivion On UHD blu ray on my E6. Not as impressive of a difference as Lucy was. The differences are more subtle compared to the standard blu ray version. Probably because the movie does not have a lot of color, other than the brief scenes with vegetation etc. There was some improvement with HDR application, and the picture did appear to be slightly sharper than the 1080p version. Still a good movie, but not sure it's really worth upgrading to the 4k version if you already have the 2K version.

Pretty funny how some sees this a "sharper" than 1080p and other sees it as clearly softer. Maybe we need more correct calibrations Really want the atmos but not a softer picture...

I don't see the complaints coming out for this release. I did an A/B compare to the blu-ray and there was substantial enough improvement well worth the upgrade to UHD. I don't notice any "softness" whatsoever and think the detail and color are very good to even great. Easily one of my top 3 to date. Leagues better than several of the ones that were given 5/5 in video like Pineapple Express or ID4.

This right here, Oblivion sounds phenomenal with the Atmos mix compared to the 7.1.

The problem is that if you compare it to Lucy, Oblivion is most definitely soft. Lucy Blows Oblivion away with the sharpness, clarity, and detail it has. When I watched the 1080P BD of Oblivion before, I was blown away with how it looked. And after watching the Lucy UHD BD, I had hoped Oblivion would have given me the same WoW! factor that the 1080P BD did. But unfortunately it did not.

While Oblivion is excellent at showing off HDR, it isn't good at showing off what is possible from the UHD BD format with the higher resolution that it's capable of.

Had a chance to take a quick look at Oblivion and it is indeed looking kinda soft. Medium to long range shots in particular have an overly smooth and waxy appearance but oddly enough closeups don't seem to suffer as much. The regular BD being upscaled by the TV looked better to me resolution wise. The UHD does contain improved colors and dynamic range over the BD though, bright highlights such as clouds and lighting are noticeable more detailed.

I'm hoping the industry starts doing a better job implementing HDR10. Out of the 15 UHD titles I own, maybe 4 or 5 impress me. The rest aren't worth the upgrade over blu ray.

I guess "soft" is in the eye of the beholder. I also A-B'd the UHD and BD and I don't think I would describe the UHD as looking "soft" at all. Most shots, particularly close-ups, looked razor sharp. I think some of the purely VFX images on the BD might look sharper than the UHD -- there was a sequence where Cruise is driving a motorcycle through a bunch of derelict ships where the BD did look sharper to my eye. Perhaps those CGI shots had a different workflow. But to me that doesn't mean the UHD looked "soft" it simply didn't look as sharp.

The color difference is no debate, the UHD's advantage is gorgeous and easy to see. There's a VFX shot that shows the moon kind of blown open -- and in the UHD the moon's core is distinctly red/yellow, but in the BD the same colors are very washed out. A close-up of Cruise's hovercraft engine turning-on is a bright blue on the UHD, but in the BD it's only slightly blue-ish. These examples go on and on.

In theory, I understand UHD's supporting greater color bandwidth...but has anyone simply goosed their 1080p saturation or otherwise tweaked their color in user controls in comparing with the 4K version to see how close it comes on "perceptual" grounds?

In other words, are the benefits of UHD largely theoretical on these 2k upscales?

I watched the UHD through Vudu. My TV has Dolby Vision. The pictures I'm seeing posted here are not what I'm seeing. Im seeing more detail, especially in the shadows. It could be the camera that took the picture but the colors are off as well. The movie looked incredible on my display. I could see quite the difference in all areas.

It may help if you post your TV model.

This raises a question, and I believe a very valid one.

Is the dolby vision version on vudu a completely different file? Like did dolby do its own upscale for the hdr grading? It's possible that it was upscaled differently than the hdr10 version and therefore wasn't given a softer picture.

Watch Lucy then watch Oblivion. After doing that you won't think Oblivion is sharp.

I didn't need to watch Lucy first to see the softness in Oblivion. I've used Oblivion on Blu for countless demos and tests so the difference was noticeable immediately. And few have a setup that is as critical as mine when it comes to setup and calibration, and yes I have tools for calibrating HDR. It still looks great, just disappointed in the obvious filtering.

While I do think Oblivion has some issues, I don't think it's fair to judge one films cinematography and clarity against another. They weren't shot or mastered the same way. It's apples to oranges.
