I hope Universal will re-release that film properly encoded on UHD BD as soon as possible.

Sony did this following the original, flawed BD release of THE 5TH ELEMENT, Paramount exchanged GLADIATOR.

Of course, Universal could also just re-release the original BD with Dolby Atmos...
Hell yeah give me BD with atmos for now like HK lucy :P

Yes, I also see that amazon doesn't have it in stock but that was last night, could change at any time. I don't know the chances of them doing anything but you never know....

They are in stock again. It seems there are 5 UHD titles that need remaster's with Divergent, Insurgent, Expendables 3, Endor's Game and this title.

In case the UHD BD gets a remaster, may I ask we also get an open matte version?

Looking at a couple of screenshots from the latest BenQ 4K DLP projector I noticed one I found rather interesting: http://www.hd.club.tw/thread-209643-1-1.html

Didn't have a chance yet to compare, but unless I'm mistaken there is obviously an open matte version around, revealing additional picture information (however, in case the VFX have been entirely done in 2.39:1 widescreen, I'd rather stick with the current aspect ratio).

this piqued my interest....

90 GB , 3 audio tracks , 5 subtitles... that looks like it came from a disc.

Not gonna rebuy this one. I already have the BD with new Atmos track and unless I can repurchase the UHD Blu-ray at a bargain basement price, it's just not that good of a movie to keep rebuying IMHO.

Personally I thought it was foolish for Sony to release this before the UHD rollout. I've missed this twice now on the IMAX laser system projecting the 4K DCP

Sony's decisions are definitely questionable.

Hell, most of the studios' choices for UHD Blu-ray have been random at best.

It's like they just throw darts at a list on the wall.

I reckon it didn't. In case you weren't aware Sony's online 4K service was rumbled a year or two back and people posted AVC re-encodes of those downloads which often went over 100GB, and it's very easy to mux in extra audio tracks, subtitles etc once they've been ripped from other sources.

The only reason the Sony downloads were sometimes over 100 GB was due to the fact they had multiple resolution versions in one package, not that the bitrates were anything to write home about.

Indeedy, I didn't say they were - note that I mentioned that they were re-encoded. This is because Sony used a tweaked version of AVC from eyeIO for greater efficiency so when they were downloaded by whoever they re-encoded them to regular AVC, sometimes even in Constant Bitrate and not Variable, hence the gigantic sizes of the leaked versions.

The US release of Lone Survivor (also from Universal) literally had the BBFC ratings on the disc so I'd assume that the UK Oblivion will be the exact same disc, yes.

I just bought Oblivion and I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one disappointed with the 4K disc! All the reviews I could find were positive, so at first I honestly thought there was something wrong with my TV, but I put in some other 4K discs to test and that wasn't the problem. Like, its whole, "really soft despite ugly edge-enhancement," thing, felt like I was watching something on my old 720p TV!

Well I mean, if my old 720p TV had HDR. Cuz the HDR element is actually one of the disc's highlights. But y'know. Still a pretty poor 4K release.

Theres actually quite a few reviews that mentioned the softness. A german review just blasted the disc calling it embarassing.

I really don't know what kind of quality control has Universal and how they allowed this disc, even more being an early release on the new format, to be pressed and released. I'll think about it twice before buying an UHD Blu ray release from Universal.

Glad I came across this thread. Are there any other UHD releases that look bad?

I think this is probably the biggest title to get flubbed so far. There are a couple Lionsgate catalog titles where you have to do some display adjustments to get the HDR grade to be reproduced correctly, but no other titles that I know of where the detail is actually obscured in the 4k Blu-ray version vs. the 1080p Blu-ray.

I think i will save myself 24.99 on this one, such a shame and a missed opportunity
