Honestly, I really don't see what everyone says is a loss of detail. I don't see a huge increase in detail either but what I see isn't too far off from other 2K upscales. For me the HDR and WCG are fantastic, and I actually would rather watch the UHD every time. I took some pictures for comparison:

They're crappy screenshots from a phone so please take with a grain of salt! Can you guess which one is the UHD?

I suck at these and I don't want to guess which is which, but I like the look of the top image better.

The top image has more detail, particularly noticeable on his face. The second picture looks a lot softer.

It's a camera picture though, but that's what I'm seeing.

The top one is the UHD but I can tell from the 'time remaining' bar so I'm cheating

(If you want to remove that when taking pics of Uni discs then press the down key on the blu-ray remote, but don't take too long otherwise that ****ing annoying screensaver kicks in)

Might as well requote my own pics while I'm at it:

Geoff D did you try the sharpness setting in the oppo that someone else mentioned? I see we both have the oppo 203 and would be curious if it helped setting the oppo to +5-6 in the oppo to bring out details some or would cause to much ringing in the picture. Which color look do you prefer the UHD or BR?

Heh, it was me who mentioned jacking up the sharpness (on my Panny originally) in the first place, the other gentleman then tried it on his OPPO. The sharpening control on the OPPO is a touch too coarse for my liking but it's worth trying. As said, the image is so over-softened that it can be over-sharpened with very few of the traditional artefacts aside from ringing along the letterbox bars. For colour I prefer the UHD hands down but damn, the sheer sharpness of the BD is breathtaking at times. It would've been nice to have had both in one but what can you do?

Yeah it is a real shame they did not do the sharpness right on the UHD. I guess i will stay with the BR and hope that one day they might release a better version.

here's a comparison pix of the Dolby Vision encode / color grading posted back in post #401

it has better balanced (unboosted) color, the image isn't fuzzy, it retains the white/gray starkness of the original cinematography, there's no black crush.

Jeez, this is insane....my UHD looks literally nothing like that at all. Occasionally the soft shot here and there but for a 2K upscale really good on my set regardless. I feel...somewhere between special and crazy.

For everyone, you were right, the top one was UHD. Also my sharpening was set to 0 for this movie like I usually have it. What do you think happened with this release?

To my eyes, this is one of the most unfairly maligned UHD releases thus far.

We're all very special and we're all very crazy, don't sweat it. Maybe my TV itself is softening something along the way but even so, in comparison to other upscales on this same screen it's desperately soft.

As for what happened there's definitely a phenom I've observed on upscales that seems to show more detail and yet more softness at the same time, it's a very weird thing to describe but I do a LOT of A/B comparisons with the 1080p SDR and this effect has become more apparent over time. I definitely think there's a general filtering of noise that's going on during the upscale process and maybe even a rolling off of certain frequencies so as to avoid aliasing and whatnot, it seems like it got carried a bit too far on this particular UHD.

At the end of the day, if you like the way a certain format looks, who cares what anyone else thinks? I never owned this title before picking up the UHD, so it was a win-win for me. I got all 3 versions (UHD, Blu-ray, & digital) for under $15 and I can enjoy whichever one suits my fancy.

I'm that gentleman(thank you for the compliment) Geoff. Yep, pretty much the entirety of this UHD is softer than the BR. I only push the Sharpness on the 203 to +6 mainly to match the PQ on the BR played on my Oppo 105D with Darbee processing at HiDef 45/50%. My guess is someone increasing the Sharpness on the 203 to +4 or +5 would closely match the detail on the BR disc WITHOUT any Darbee processing. Those with a 203/205, give it a shot! Add in the HDR and color and the UHD will be the disc I reach for.

As much as I dislike the whole notion of what Darbee does it would certainly come in handy for UHD discs like this.

Yeah I had a Darbee when I had my Epson 5030 projector, felt it worked well with projectors for that extra sharpensss but would never use one on a panel. I sold it when I sold my 103.

If you think the UHD is as sharp as the BD, you either need new eyes or a new TV.
It’s painfully obvious. I noticed it in the first 5 seconds of watching the UHD.
Straight thought my gear was broken. Literally had to put another UHD disc in, then the BD to make sure I wasn’t crazy. It is so bad I honestly don’t know how it ever made it to the manufacturing stage. Just an absolutely horrible UHD. The worst example of what the format has to offer over std bluray.
