Universal got to redo / correct these:

1. Oblivion
2. Serenity
3. King Kong 2005
4. Bourne Identity
5. E.T.

If Universal can do redos of Blu-rays like Scarface and Back to the Future, hopefully they can redo 4Ks at some point

I'm all about dat HDR on this one, I can't go back to the BD. I'd still happily watch the UHD even if I wasn't juicing the sharpness.

For me, the BD not only offers superior detail but the ‘colder’, more austere color scheme, while ‘only’ SDR, better matches my personal recollection of how the film looked in theaters. The color pop and range of the UHD looks inarguably eye-catching, sure, but from my perspective, it’s just lipstick on a pig.

E.T. isn't that bad is it?

Serenity is worse than the blu-ray, less detail

haven't seen Oblivion even in any format or in theater yet, is the blu-ray sharpened maybe and it's just a very soft source?

KK 2005 sometimes has better detail than the blu-ray, but sometimes worse due to odd DNR, the HDR grading is nuclear and odd, almost impossible to tame to look normal

haven't seen B.I. UHD

Van Helsing didn't see the UHD yet, but do have it, cool movie, from what I hear it has a few things better than the blu-ray

No, it is not. You wanna talk remastering JURASSIC PARKs 1 and 3, or THE BOURNE IDENTITY, fine. But E.T., while maybe not being flawless, gets waayyy more right than it gets wrong.

Does this have IMAX larger format scenes on disc? Like the aspect ratio changes in the Nolan movies?

Nah. Regular Anamorphic.

Though I did watch this in an actual IMAX 70mm theater and it did open up to 1:85.1 and it looked glorious. Pity they didn't do this for the BD and UHD.

Yeah I’ll never understand the thinking behind not putting the best resources out on disc or home releases for that matter

Exactly. Bonehead move.

They did the same for Prometheus. I was surprised they didn't put that version on HD, even if it was a trainwreck, it looked beautiful in 1:85.1 especially the scene with the juggernaut. Truly a missed opportunity.

Anamorphic is not a thing on HD and 4K Blu-rays. I suppose you meant "regular 2.39:1".

just watched this movie for the first time
man, I really liked it, but man why did Universal have to do something weird to the UHD, it seems smooth

not sure the blu-ray is entirely natural either, maybe sharpened?
it's all very odd, as it was shot on digital cams that should give an ultra finely detailed picture as is, not sure what is going around with the look of detail with this all around, what was it like in the theaters? (speaking of seeing it in the theater, I bet this was awesome in an IMAX theater!, I was occupied doing some stuff then in LA and guess that explains how I missed this).

Well, wading into the hugely subjective waters of recollecting what a film looked like years ago in theaters is always a formula for disastrous public discourse but, for whatever it’s worth, though I can’t claim to remember the precise level of fine detail rendering, i staunchly recall the overlook of the film much more closely matching the cooler, icier look of the BD. The UHD’s color range, while lovely and striking when taken on its own, appears to me to be tarted up from what had been originally exhibited in what feels like a studio’s attempt to push HDR and WCG as a sales point, rather than remain fidelitous to the filmmakers’ intentions.

This is my favorite movie. The only issue I remember with the UHD was that Andrea Riseborough's face looked washed out in closeups. Also noticed this problem in Arrival and to a lesser extent, Elysium.

This movie was the first 4K I ever bought. Still have it, still enjoy it - the only downside to my mind is there's not enough Andrea Riseborough

Andrea and 4K UHD are an effective team

No surprises I'm team 4K disc with this. Not going back to BD. Don't care if the best videographers in the world insist the sharpness of the SDR version makes for the better experience. I don't feel the same

When did this go OOP?

Is it really OOP, or it simply a stock issue?

It's selling for stupid money from the scalpers now.
