Just an update on the Xbox One S not playing Universal UHD's. I received a second copy from Amazon and it still does not play. I have reached out to Microsoft twice and they don't seem to have a fix for the issue. So far every other 4k disk has played perfect.

That being said, this is not a Lions Gate situation like with Expendables 3, Ender's Game, or Divergent. With those catalog titles, I seriously lean toward the Blu-ray if I'm sitting down to watch the movies(definitely with Expendables 3). With Oblivion, the Blu-ray is stronger in some areas whereas the UHD is superior in others. Also, with Lucy reportedly looking great(I hate the movie, so I haven't seen the disc) and Lone Survivor not suffering from the same problems as Oblivion, there doesn't seem to be a quality control issue over at Universal like there is with Lions Gate catalog titles. |

Don't worry Ray, you're doing the right thing. I have other UHDs (even 2K DIs) that are fantastic. LS and Obv are jokes. I've got years of watching both on BD and the UHD was disappointing within the first 30sec..
Ignore the childish DV crowd as well. They've shown their cards and it's amazing, to say the least. |

LS DOES suffer the same softness. Maybe not as noticeable, but it's a huge step down in sharpness from the BD. On the BD, distance detail, pores on the face, weapon details, trees etc are crystal clear/sharp. Not so on the UHD. No pores visible etc.

I didn't see anywhere near as many problems with Lone Survivor as Oblivion.

Honestly, Oblivion didn't look bad to me at all, and there were certain segments that looked sharper than the BD to me. Certainly the audio and HDR/color were a step up from the BD (though it does look like they also went for a more muted color palette with the UHD).
That being said, this is one movie where the director filmed all the elements in 4K (sans the VFX possibly) and the studio wouldn't pay for a 4K DI. So I did contact them at the page linked earlier in this thread to ask that they consider doing a new 4K DI for this movie and re-releasing it. Obviously I'd prefer a true 4K release to a 2K upscale (regardless of whether the upscale is DNR'd or not)... |
