Just an update on the Xbox One S not playing Universal UHD's. I received a second copy from Amazon and it still does not play. I have reached out to Microsoft twice and they don't seem to have a fix for the issue. So far every other 4k disk has played perfect.

It blows my mind that anyone can't see it with this movie. I would suggest they may have eye issues or perhaps using a smaller tv which makes it more difficult to see the these flaws?

I took over 10 comparison pictures, and in every 1 of them the uhd version is soft. It's not a coincidence when the same issue appears in every picture. I guess I don't completely blame folks for saying the pictures look out of focus, because it's hard to believe the difference is that stark, but unfortunately it is. One of the good posters on AVS that has ties to tv manufacturers said he made it 10 minutes into the movie last night and had to turn it off. He didn't want to ruin one of his favorite movies.

The colors and hdr are excellent, and I think that is impairing people's judgement ad a whole. The hdr is excellent.
The UHD transfer definitely looks off compared to the Blu-ray. I thought the picture was kinda dark and not as detailed in some respects, but soft is probably a better way of putting it. The colors are so much better though thanks to the HDR that it's frustrating they couldn't get this completely right.

That being said, this is not a Lions Gate situation like with Expendables 3, Ender's Game, or Divergent. With those catalog titles, I seriously lean toward the Blu-ray if I'm sitting down to watch the movies(definitely with Expendables 3). With Oblivion, the Blu-ray is stronger in some areas whereas the UHD is superior in others.

Also, with Lucy reportedly looking great(I hate the movie, so I haven't seen the disc) and Lone Survivor not suffering from the same problems as Oblivion, there doesn't seem to be a quality control issue over at Universal like there is with Lions Gate catalog titles.

Don't worry Ray, you're doing the right thing. I have other UHDs (even 2K DIs) that are fantastic. LS and Obv are jokes. I've got years of watching both on BD and the UHD was disappointing within the first 30sec..
Ignore the childish DV crowd as well. They've shown their cards and it's amazing, to say the least.

LS DOES suffer the same softness. Maybe not as noticeable, but it's a huge step down in sharpness from the BD. On the BD, distance detail, pores on the face, weapon details, trees etc are crystal clear/sharp. Not so on the UHD. No pores visible etc.

I didn't see anywhere near as many problems with Lone Survivor as Oblivion.

Honestly, Oblivion didn't look bad to me at all, and there were certain segments that looked sharper than the BD to me. Certainly the audio and HDR/color were a step up from the BD (though it does look like they also went for a more muted color palette with the UHD).

That being said, this is one movie where the director filmed all the elements in 4K (sans the VFX possibly) and the studio wouldn't pay for a 4K DI. So I did contact them at the page linked earlier in this thread to ask that they consider doing a new 4K DI for this movie and re-releasing it.

Obviously I'd prefer a true 4K release to a 2K upscale (regardless of whether the upscale is DNR'd or not)...

With those problematic titles from Lionsgate people need to become very vocal and a recall needs to be ordered with replacement discs.

Lionsgate has a few quality catalog titles in their small pantheon that I'm more worried about than the crappy Hunger Games.

by the way, the colors at the detault settings are incredibly muted. I had to use "hdr+" and dynamic mode on my K8500 to make it look "normal". besides the resolution, it looks fantastic. But its heartbreaking seeing such a reference quality blu ray loose what made it reference quality on BD.

pay attention to textures. on the 4k version, the texture is completely "smoothed" over. toms face, the tree bark, the inner part of the crater of the pentagon. look at the sharpness and defintion of tom cruises eyes. Horrendous. Throughout the movie you will see texture for sure, but on the BD the texture is just so much more defined and clean.
What is HDR+? I have the K8500 but I've never heard of HDR+?

Lone Survivor does look much superior to Oblivion and that was a 2K master as well. I'm wondering if something went wrong on the Oblivion UHD. Very frustrating as I really enjoy this film.
