Can you give me a few timestamps to go by? The ones Ray posted have the times posted but I'd like to have a few more where the BD is supposed to have more detail.

It could be a case where the Samsung player is filtering out some of the detail that's always been there on these UHDs and Oblivion UHD will compare more favorably detail-wise.
No Samsung player here, I can tell you for a fact the BD resolves more spatial detail, there are things like individual hairs visible that are simply gone on the UHD.

There's a cloud missing on the BD on time 5:11 that's there on the UHD. Although that particular detail may be more related to HDR/WCG than anything else. I only checked out the first 5 minutes cause I haven't seen the movie yet, will do more comparisons later.

I thought you might mean stuff that's dynamic range related, which is why I mentioned spatial detail above, i.e. hard resolution, not blown highlights.

I agree 100% that the HDR & WCG brings out range to the image which will uncover more information in the brighter areas of the picture, but that's never been the main issue with Oblivion.

will have a look if I get some time tonight, since getting my 203 and new OLED, I've been mightily pissing off my missus with fiddling between discs checking differences etc!! haha

Forgot to mention that there is clearly more facial detail on the UHD scene where he says "hello Bob" very early in the movie.

Not sure if those saying the UHD is softer are only focusing on those few scenes which may look softer and not giving any credit to those scenes which do look better detail-wise (which may be the majority of the movie?)

I'm ashamed to say that I got my Oppo right when I started a 9 day holiday but basically never even used it because I was distracted by other hobbies. I'm really shocked and pleasantly surprised to see how much better the UHD pictures looks (on this and on X-Men: DOFP) on the Oppo 203 vs. the Samsung.

This is wholly unscientific but here's two photos just before he speaks to "Bob", UHD first and BD second (exact same frame):

The stubble on his face, the intricacies of his hair, the stitching on his harness, it's smooshed away on the UHD and it's not this one shot, it's the whole movie. People aren't making this up.

I was comparing a different angle shot, curious now but I'm at work so I'll check it out later.

Obviously no one is making anything up but also obviously there is a huge variation in impressions depending on TV and player combo. I'll try to take a few pics of that same shot if I can.

Wow TC looks like a corpse on the Blu-ray compared to the UHD...

Like several Blu/UHD comparisons the Blu is less saturated in terms of the colour, though please bear in mind that these are photos of a screen so the colour as you see it should not be treated as gospel.

Told ya.

BTW, did you take these pictures? By far the best example yet as they are super clear. That whole smooth look is basically the entire movie. I couldn't stop focusing on it. It killed the depth of the picture even tho hdr gave it more pop, hard to explain.

Yes I took the pictures using a Sony DSC-WX100. Only a lickle pocket camera compared to some super DSLR big boy but it's got a really decent Exmor sensor.

True true, but it's still a stark difference even if it's not a 100% reliable pic.

The disparity in detail is pretty clear, though.

Well, this is a Universal title so it's almost fitting they had to smooth it over as a DNR celebration of sorts on an early UHD BD. Seeing what the did to An American Werewolf in London remastered BD and some of the Marx Bros, it's evident they are going down this wicked path to some extent again. They just cannot help themselves.

Fair enough. The Blu-ray version of the movie has a very clean and clinical kind of colour scheme, it works fine when viewed in isolation but yes it's pretty stark when directly compared the UHD.

The point is that the BD color correction sure is the original intended look of the movie.... HDR wasn't a thing when this came out....

It's the intended look as far as the 709 trim pass goes, yes, but it was mastered to DI with the P3 gamut at the minimum.

Ok, but can P3 color space alone make a difference that big in color scheme?

Probably not, but then that's the conundrum of UHD + HDR: the colour volume is drastically expanded because of the increase in dynamic range.

[edit] And just to add, it's not like the ENTIRE colour grade has been shifted, e.g. if you look at everything but Tom's face in those photos then the colour grade is extremely similar, it's just the flesh tones that have been warmed up somewhat.
