As much I like the colors of the UHD it has been filtered and the Blu-ray has been slightly sharpened.
Wish there were some screencaps of the itunes DV encode for some comprehensive comparisons. |

Some of that difference may be exaggerated due to some mild sharpening on the Blu, fair enough, but even so the UHD has still got a chunk of detail missing in action: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=115 |

Just did a screen cap and run through myself between the 2 versions.
I would say, 4K is a much better visually overall, the HDR image is more expressive. In comparison, the SDR felt flat, and on some scenes the sharpness (which this version admittedly has more of, took the realism out of the scene) I believe the Softening filter used on the HDR version is intentional to better blend the scene together. Any scenes involving clouds (which are many) , HDR no contest, SDR clouds are shit. So it comes down to what you're looking for, if you're an avid Tom-Cruise fanboi, and routinely pause movies to count how many pock marks are on his face, Yea, SDR has you covered. Everyone else, 4K version's the way to go. |

Alls I'll say is: I bet people wouldn't be complaining about the UHD looking "too sharp" if it had the same level of detail as the BD. If it did have that level of detail then, 2K upscale or not, it would be one of the very best discs on the entire format. As it is, it's a bit of a bodge job.

I believe it's been for the better, because many of the blue screen scenes are blended better, and the characters look like they're in it now, rather than walking in front of cutouts. ![]() |

I’m sure if we had the option for a new UHD with extra sharpness everyone would be all over it.

I believe it’s a serious blunder/botch job/mistake. I’m lol’ing at how the softness is being downplayed by some here. I don’t know what kind of gear (including vision) those are dealing with, but the softness is severe. I run a high-end HTPC and I have the ability to do A/B comparisons literally with a touch of a key. The softness is drastic and really hurts the UHDs presentation. A ton of data is simply missing from the UHD scenes. |
