Sounds delicious.

I believe it’s a serious blunder/botch job/mistake.

I’m lol’ing at how the softness is being downplayed by some here.
I don’t know what kind of gear (including vision) those are dealing with, but the softness is severe. I run a high-end HTPC and I have the ability to do A/B comparisons literally with a touch of a key. The softness is drastic and really hurts the UHDs presentation.
A ton of data is simply missing from the UHD scenes.
There's a difference between Missing and Softened.

Missing would mean they used a lower resolution source, and are actually missing data.

in THIS CASE, they had the data, they just decided on a softer look, it's a different representation of THE SAME DATA.

For example, if you look at faces in most movies, nearly all the female characters get significant digital facial touchups (softening/ smooth wrinkles/ acne/ pock marks), while male characters are mostly all-natural.

Are we Missing data ? No, the data manipulation was decided upon.

Sharper is not always better.

And as to your equipment, what tone curve are you using for the 3DLut ?

I believe it's been for the better, because many of the blue screen scenes are blended better, and the characters look like they're in it now, rather than walking in front of cutouts.
And I call bullshit on that being an "artistic decision", or at least anything driven by the actual filmmakers and not some random dilbert in the colouring suite. We don't know either way, but it's fun to speculate. Now where's mah hot dog edition at?!?

Heck of it is, I find that blue/green screen blends far better in HDR than it does in SDR, the resolution of it is secondary. I hope you don't mean all the scenes with them looking out of the apartment windows though, as they used a giant wrap-around LED screen for that stuff...

I usually unsubscribe from threads after a while but I keep myself subscribed to this one. Too entertaining lol

I pick the uhd 10 times out of 10.

I too have the blu-ray release, and would love to experience the HDR and Atmos upgrade as it's a solid film technically and otherwise, however much like many others likely watching this debate or investigating the general concensus, I've held off picking it up in various UHD promotions through fear of being disappointed.

I crank the shit out of it is what I do. Luma mid sharpness to +6, luma high sharpness to +6, Edge Correction to +1 to remove the ringing on the letterbox bars. If I do this to literally any other movie it becomes an unholy mess, but as Oblivion has been so heavily low-pass filtered it can stand to be sharpened back up again just as aggressively with minimal artefacing. It still doesn't resolve as much detail as the BD but what it does do is give it back something of the same sense of sharpness, and when combined with that luscious HDR it's a beaut.

Awesome, thanks for the help and it definitely looked a lot better with those settings.

I'm not reading 79 pages.
I'm getting the impression though it's not a good 4k blu ray?
Can someone regular on this thread give me the note's of what's wrong please.

The color, HDR, and Atmos are fantastic! The video itself has a lot of filtering though. I’m not too bothered by it myself, and it comes with the Blu-ray anyway (love the isolated soundtrack on it!) and can often be found below ten bucks.

Worth it.

It’s been that cheap at Target for months, hasn’t it? It’ll be that cheap again soon enough if not.

I can't deny the HDR once I saw it and I don't see the softness detracting from my experience to the extent people claim here. That combination makes the UHD my default. But I will throw in the BD after for comparison someday soon after my first OLED viewing.

My take is it's gotta be the UHD in ranking and worth taking the chance on purchase to see for yourself what YOU think.

As Darth Vader once said, "I find your lack of detail disturbing......"

As much as I really want to love the uhd disc with its terrific hdr, I know this film very well from many prior viewings, and I actually find it distracting how soft the uhd presentation can look at times. I've literally caught myself blinking to clear my eyes slightly and try to refocus on the screen. It's not nearly so noticeable on screens under 55", but on my 75", I ultimately wind up stopping the presentation and putting the blu ray back in. Which then makes me feel like I just got back from the optometrist with my corrected new contact lens prescription.....

While I do love the color timing of the uhd, this is one of the very, very few titles where I find myself considering the blu ray to still be my preferred means of viewing the film. I might...might......feel differently if I had a smaller screen.

It's worth trying to sharpen it back up again, the Panasonic players are rather good for this title.

Geoff, is this the sharpness control in the HDR Optimizer menu? Switched over to the Panny from the Oppo last month for UHD content and am still learning all the bells and whistles.

It's nowt to do with the Optimiser, it's just there in the Panny's picture settings under Sharpness. Set both mid and high Luma to +6 and set Edge Correction to +1 (this is assuming that you're not using any extra sharpening or other such enhancements on the TV already) and it makes Oblivion's UHD look keener without including the usual sharpening-related artefacts.

Sheesh, you know it's bad when you need to make such drastic settings changes.
