So I went back to the BD for it's isolated score in 5.1 96kHz 24bit
But when you look at the actual file, this thing falls apart
The 96kHz are fake! Audio doesn't go beyond 24kHz barrier. It's also 18bit. All in all the audio should be, well it's, perfectly work in 5.1 48kHz 24bit.

Why did they do 96kHz? Sounds much better on paper :P
Noneless, it's a really cool isolated score. But I don't like to be lied by a studio's PR.

What software did you use to analyse this? Maybe they actually recorded the score at 96 kHz but the A/D converters had anti-aliasing filters that don't go beyond 24 kHz. As for the 18 bit, it was probably recorded at 24 bit, but maybe someone was a bit too "agressive" with the dithering at the mastering stage.

Does that make the "96 kHz" claim a lie? Not really...

It's a digital score, meaning created entirely on a computer. This makes already unlikely to be 96kHz at the source.
Software used: eac3to, Adobe Audition and spek

Oblivion: The Macular Degeneration Edition
Geoff, I have a Panasonic UB400 and after much fussing I have found Chroma sharpness -4 and edge correction 0 (for 4k and +1 for BD's) the best/most natural to my eye.

Am I right in thinking you have a Panny UB820? If so, how do you set these features for normal 4k and BD's??

Scores tend to be recorded at hi-res digital but mastered at 48KHz for use in the movie and 44.1KHz for the album release. (Disney is most likely to offer 96KHz/192KHz albums but other studios tend to stick to CD frequency.)

Anyway this score used actual recorded instruments with synths layered on top.

I still absolutely adore this live performance of the credits song.

Gave this another spin yesterday. The PQ is still top notch in my book even if it is a bit less-sharp than the blu.

What you want "audio" (audio= 20 Hz to 20000 Hz, what human ear can hear) over 24 Khz for?
I think the point of Hi Rez audio is not recording higher frequencies, which of course can be done, but keep anti-aliasing filters as far as possible from the audio band and also use simpler and better performing digital filtering.

Having no audio beyond the 24kHz at all, makes this 96kHz file a fake. You can do the same audio in a proper 48kHz at 24bit. Universal just used this as a PR thing. I was merely pointing out something. Don't get caught up in something else

420. Chroma Sharpness to -1, Edge Correction to 0. This is for UHD and BD, the edge correction can cause moiré when upscaling BD (see here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post16693333) so now I leave it off.

I bought this on 4K bluray recently from Amazon for AU$15. Was prepared to be wowed but after reading the comments here I'm now expecting disappointment Especially when the director wanted an actual 4K release and the studio decided to go the cheaper route

Almost got it on iTunes for $5 but the extras were limited and was missing the isolated score track and commentary. Oblivion and Tron Legacy are 2 of my favourite pure visual movies (and no wonder with the same director) so I prefer to own the physical releases especially as they kinda flopped at the box office.

The 4K UHD Blu-ray of Oblivion gets a thumbs-up from yours truly. After watching it last night, I'll consider it my go-to version of the movie from now on.

I like how the 4K HDR presents a more filmic look overall. After reading comments, I expected softness to be a big problem, but there was still plenty of fine detail befitting of the movie's inherently gauzy look during certain scenes that I remember from my theatrical viewing and from past viewings by way of the standard Blu-ray.

The music score by M83 is my jam. I've seen the band twice in concert.

Here's my old review.

Oblivion is such a cool-looking movie with beautiful Iceland location settings. The plot is derivative of older science fiction films, and I prefer the melancholic air of the first half to the action-packed second half, but this is still a four-and-a-half star endeavor.

Definitely in the minority for this opinion. But I can't get on you for it because I think the Terminator 2 4k looks great

Wondering if the iTunes version is free of DNR? I checked the preview it looks excellent with all grain in-tact but the preview is 2160 SDR and not 2160 HDR.

For me the softness isn't the issue but the incorrectly mastered black levels are. This is typical for some early Uni releases like the Huntsman Winter's War. They should make a replacement for those discs.
