The HDR remastering of older movies is an ethical very slippery slope when the filmmaker is no longer living and a studio is compelled to rely upon a colorist or a temporary *outside advisor* for channeling the Director’s thoughts/intentions from heaven (or, for wherever/whatever be one’s personal belief).

I’ll be at the show in Vegas on this date(s), but come April 13? or 14th in NYC, Vizio will be doing its TV event, which I’d assume the press types will be covering in their own way and where I, although pretty much display brand agnostic, along with I assume Vizio-enthusiasts? like PeterTHX , look forward to hearing more details on these ( http://www.vizio.com/r-series ) 800 nit 4K models with regards to their specific HDR implementation....given Vizio’s partnership/ funding of the recent 4K HDR short documentary made by Everdream (a studio in the LA area), which graded and mastered the short doc -

(https://vimeo.com/123370017 in Dolby Vision.

P.S.
In the professional realm, on a somewhat ironic side note, just fairly recently (last year) the standard for studio reference display (HD tv) luminance was set at 100 nits (see …http://shop.standards.ie/nsai/detail...ductID=1789855 ) - actually lowered from the previous old recommendation of 120 nits.

P.S. Speaking of which ^, the Arsenal v. Liverpool match I watched yesterday was sensational but heads-up to my friend Steed, the Sunderland v. Newcastle viewing will just have to wait until tomorrow as….’aint nobody in the world (but my wife) tonight’ .

Do have an inherent bias for 4K displays and so won't hesitate in posting links to reporters' articles like this - http://www.tomsguide.com/us/samsung-...ews-20739.html

Especially when they write (in regards to HD resolution displays) ominous lines like…”Is good-old 1080p HDTV passé already? It sounded that way when I spoke to Samsung. "Are we going to focus on [HDTV]? No," said Bill Lee, Samsung's vice president for TV marketing.”

And

Will any of this make it to your lowly HDTV? Perhaps. "I would imagine that [technology] naturally will migrate down," Lee said. "But in terms of timing, we don't know."

A topic perhaps for another day....
…..because ‘4K’ (or, to be precise, 3840 x 2160 for the pixel counters) is much about spatial resolution and two critical anatomic components of thee eye involved in determining/executing human spatial resolution capability are imaged and evaluated in those two basic jpeg’s linked above….something of which I’m sure was readily recognized by *video gurus* on outside audio-video *science* websites where they often pontificate with reckless abandon about vision and color science, when in reality, they don’t even know, how much….they don’t know.

Even though I had a biased interest in seeing Man City drop points, I failed to remember to record the Palace v. Man City match ….just so tired after the Easter day ride and subsequent activities with my loved ones.

Fabulous couple of days with wins by Arsenal, Sunderland, Palace…and a University in Durham North Carolina that plays some mighty enviable basketball.

5 in a row...5 in a row...5 in a row

Wow! What a GREAT strike by Defoe of Sunderland before the end of the 1st half! Of what soccer matches I saw from the Prem, it was the Goal of the Weekend and there were some truly fabulous goals this past weekend. Steed, I love to watch Derbys . There is so much adrenalin from the teams and fans especially in the first 20min. or so…until they all get a little tired and things go from a hyper-frenetic state to just very fast.

For those who didn’t have the opportunity to view it on TV, the setting was a fan filled stadium of about what 50,000? excited, passionate folks on a bright….very bright…sunny afternoon (Steed, you could have made some serious coin just selling baseball caps or visors at the venue as I noticed everyone on one side of the stadium constantly with a hand on their brow). In fact, it was so sunny that at least for the entire first half , almost exactly half of the field was washed in sunshine whereas the other half of the field (pitch) was drowned in shadow from the stadium stand….a rather typical situation for a southern California day at many a stadium sporting event, but I guess somewhat unusual for Northeast England?

So anyway, on a purely video analysis note, that Sunderland v. Newcastle derby typified this from 2013 in that the imagery begged for HDR capture, transmission and display at home. For not just serving to better visualize the ball; but also, the players….esp. to help with clearly seeing the Newcastle players because the shadows were so deep and their kits were all grey along with the Sunderland lads with their black shorts and socks.

Then when the shadows engulfed almost the entire field one could better visualize the soccer match but then the stadium crowd in the sunshine was all over-exposed in the SDR transmission so a viewer couldn’t make out any details in order to spot the Steed and the sisters.

Point being, there is just as much a value for HDR in broadcast sporting events (or arguably more? depending on one’s viewpoint and interests) as there is for filmmakers with motion pictures.

While I’m discussing the topic of the HDR parameter of UHD video (which also includes wider color gamut), for those youngins who are reading, student membership enabling access to webcasts is cheap ($35.)….https://www.smpte.org/membership/individual

So, sign up and mark your calendars for this SMPTE Educational webcast on April 23….https://www.smpte.org/webcasts/HighDynamicRange . Also I hope that this time, any invited audio/video reporter-types get the presentation facts straight, as this motion picture stuff is really not nearly as complex as brain surgery nor rocket science.

As to what to expect for those contemplating listening in? Well, I would suspect the presentation to include talking about starting out the workflow with using 16-bit half-float RGB and describing the differences between Scene Referred ( see 5th paragraph - http://www.xdcam-user.com/2014/02/ac...-life-simpler/ ) vs. display referenced linear light transfer function in terms of color correction and HDR intermediate…plus Gary promoting the value of using linear light (i.e. a source gamma of 1.0) rather than what is used today in post production.

Do these DCI packages come with all the adverts for coca cola as well as trailers and posters? How does the film look?

The approach be the single layer ( https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post10613303) type HDR solution (with backwards compatible (to legacy devices) standard dynamic range) by Technicolor http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...ve-high-787349

No stinkin commercials. Add on a tiny amount of data (MB) for things like partial packages for open captioning. Thee most cutting edge recent DCP news is that in the march towards implementing SMPTE, rather than interop DCPs (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...te#post9842561 ), the first wide distribution of a DCP in SMPTE format (although with limited features) was released by a major studio and shown in movie theaters just a short time ago.

I feel certain that this new Digital Cinema information ^ will be revealed during the Technology Summit on Cinema (TSC) portion of NAB 2015 this coming weekend.
