Alright, non-HDR OLED owner here. I have finally generated a 3D LUT for madVR so it can better simulate what HDR would actually look like if my hardware supported it.

Compared to the BD versions, I have found that the colors pop more, and the contrast seems to be noticeably better, too. So, uh, why isn't the BD version able to provide that quality to begin with?

Well, SDR uses Rec.709 and the displays are 8-bit.

HDR is using Rec.2020 colorspace and 10-bit displays can exhibit so many more color and brightness gradations (even grayscale gradations). So with 4 times as many pixels on that true 4K screen, it’s not just resolution, it’s HDR and true expanded colorspace.

SDR can also use Rec2020 and higher bit color.

Well they can, but when is it actually done?

For those interested, the EBU HDR monitor tests report is due out this quarter.
For this testing, experts from the BBC, CBC, IRT and RAI had prepared the measurements, while participants from NRK, RTS and ZDF assisted, especially with the subjective evaluation. The testing followed the requirements expressed in EBU Tech 3320 and included measuring the monitors’ luminance ranges, uniformity, black level, color gamut, contrast ratio, transfer function, grey scale reproduction, delay time, and more. Pixel defects, image sticking, treatment of illegal signals, etc. were verified subjectively. The results showed – as expected – that currently available professional HDR-capable monitors differ significantly in several aspects. This is not necessarily a bad thing. As the differences tend to be accompanied by differences in price, depending on the application, trade-offs may be made. For example, the measured video delay varied between roughly 20 and 60 ms (2160p, HLG, top left quadrant). This may be critical in certain (live, camera-operated) use cases, but irrelevant for simple post-production setups.

It was interesting to see that the tests revealed a new type of effect, which may be called ‘dynamic burn-in’. It turned out that some monitors still show parts of (repetitive) moving images long after the signal has been removed. As with static burn-in, cleaning signals may be used to remove the effect, but they may be very screen-specific. Another lesson from the tests relates to the test signals, some of which will need to be updated. To take one example, display panels age over time and with use; to protect screens from aging prematurely, vendors may choose to limit the light level under certain conditions. These dimming approaches can interfere with some of the test signals that have been used up to now.

For Maniac (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5580146/) the filmmakers used LiveGrain and a film weave sampled from an actual 35mm film print and applied with VFX to produce an old school filmic look to the digital cinematography. Agent Kay, Geoff… others who might watch it let us know what you think of the final HDR product on Netflix.

ray0414, Before the inevitable brand fanboyism kicks in after the announcement of the final results, I checked out AVS to see if they’d re-opened the 2018 Value Electronics shootout thread. Hadn’t been back to that forum in quite some time. What happened to Scott Wilkinson, their other editor?

^ thee above is not meant to promote Philips TVs (which I know next to 0 about), but rather another Venice/Sigma use case.

Not sure, Scott has been very quiet all year. He's only written a couple articles all year, and I don't ever see home theater geeks podcasts anymore.

Bummer. I wonder if the cancelation is related to his absence on avs as well.

It was canceled by it's host TWiT.tv. I recall reading something about the owner of TWiT being rather rude to Scott in his final podcast. I don't remember the details. I tell ya, the old memory banks aren't what they used to be. Here's his announcnemt on the cancelation. It's back from Oct. 2017. Almost a year ago. As far as Scott's absence from AVS, I'm not sure what's going on there.

That AVS thread details the events, including the thoroughly disgusting behaviour by TWIT Leo Laporte. "Duh, sorry I 'had to' fire you". Unbelievable. In "The Tech Guy" episode 1428 Leo, when interviewing Scott, not only mentioned it in passing (which would have been bad enough - you just do not do this sort of thing) but actually had an extended conversation about it! How humiliating for Scott - who was exemplary in the way that he dealt with it.

The more I learn about TWIT Leo Laporte, the more bad stuff comes out of the woodwork.

Not referring to his falling out with TWiT, I’m talking about his falling out with AVS, what did this member from B.C. mean? -
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/68-di...l#post56777842

As far as the remaining editor who’s still there, when hyping 8K spatial resolution so much, he should learn a little about temporal resolution - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...l#post15488741 (and previous posts in that thread) . Although I guess owls do move when they turn their heads or blink.

Alternatively, the Sony Venice can become even more compact when detaching the block and using an umbilical cord….

Reminds me a little of what Cameron did to create his 3D rigs for Avatar, they didn't just put a couple of F950 cameras into the housings but they used the processors of the cameras in conjunction with a more compact optical block to create a smaller rig.
