Well done for even having one, so many folks don't. I went and got mine done after my best friend passed away from a horrific motorcycle accident 3 years ago.

This is something I need to do, especially with having kids.

Did you guys use a lawyer?

Kids or no kids, it's a great idea.

Yes, I had one referred to me by my financial advisor. Since I'm technically single and don't have any kids, mine was very vanilla so it didn't cost much to write up (maybe $200+ or so). Just make an appointment and get it done, man...you'll be so glad you did.

PS - FYI, in my will, I left you all of the debt from my bar tabs.

i didn't.

i found a free online resource. i didn't want to type one up again. and this let me just put in a few things and not type the whole thing over. it also has a place for several witnesses and a place to have it notarized (which i'll probably have done either today or tomorrow).

once i finished, i saved it as a pdf to my computer, i printed a copy, and i put a copy on a usb drive to keep with the hard copy. the hard copy and usb drive will go in my fire safe along with my other important papers.

and if anyone hasn't done this, i highly suggest it. i scanned and copied all of my important papers (vehicle titles, will, insurance, both health and vehicle, deed to home, etc.) and put the originals in the safe. i keep the copies on 2 usb drives. one stays in the safe with the originals and one stays with me. and there are also copies on my computer. all electronic versions are encrypted...just in case.

my mom has her important papers in the safe, as well.

also, if you use it, you can save all of these in the cloud to make them accessible anywhere.

More good advice. I actually got myself a safe deposit box for all my documents.

we used to have one, but the cost was something we didn't wanna worry about anymore.

don't get me wrong, it's a great idea. but we just didn't wanna have to pay for one, anymore. so we got the fire safe.

i was just thinking about it again and i might get another one to keep at my sister's house; just in case something happens to mine.

Right on, man...it's all about preference. I just like having mine offsite...a bank is far more secure fire-proof and theft-wise than my house...or at least I hope it is.

Oh, by far!! (I used to be a branch employee).

But, I do like having one at my residence. I have a fire safe but it's small. I'd like to get a much bigger one soon.

I actually think safes in general are cool, I'd like to get several older ones as "collectibles" but actually use them.

our isn't all that big, either.

it's perfect for documents and smaller items. and i keep all the documents in resealable bags. the safe, itself, is water resistant, but i'd much rather double the protection for cheap than rely on just the safe. we got it at lowe's for a pretty decent price.

one other thing i'd suggest...

take some pics or video of every room in your house/apartment. this helps not only in case of fire, but in case of a break-in and you get robbed. i forgot to mention that i also keep a usb drive in the safe with this information. i went through each room in the house and took detailed pics of everything. then i did a video walk-through as well. with pics and video, you can prove without a doubt that you had...whatever...in your house. i also keep a document with a list of all electronics with their serial number and model number. it just makes it easier for insurance companies if they have something to compare when they go to write the check to replace anything that was damaged/stolen.

some may call me paranoid, but when you're asked if you can prove you owned something...and you can't...you learn to make detailed records of everything. i even did this for my shop and all my tools and stuff in there. and...we had the shop and everything in it added to the homeowner's insurance so in case it burns down, it and all the stuff in it can be replaced.

and i did the same thing for the stuff i keep in my truck.

so take the time to cover yourself. 'cause you never know....

ot: just got through taking everything off the kitchen counters and cleaning the counters. then cleaning everything as it's put back on the counter.

also pulled the fridge out and cleaned behind there really good. and i took the grill off the front and sprayed it down and cleaned it good, too. i need to do the inside as well, but it can wait until tomorrow.

I'm headed back up to Palo Alto either to go to Facebook or go for a hike near Stanford. Got the iPod Classic out and was listening to Jack Johnson's Better Together live from Paris. Beautiful song

Nah, not paranoid, smart...I not only envy your thoroughness, but also applaud your initiative in doing so. That being said, I have already done some of this, but not all of it specifically the video walk-through which I have been meaning to do for YEARS now.
