Vancouver seems not only to be a hotbed for mountain biking, but also for advanced intellectual thought so it’s only fitting that the next ACM SAP conference is being held there - http://sap.acm.org/2018/cfp.php . For those sticklers, to tie on-topic, note the bullet point -
• Perception of high dynamic range scenes and images

P.S.
Similarly, the city of Vancouver also has been the venue for past Blu-ray Disc association meetings, e.g. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...er#post4824830

^ Indeed. SpectralCal-Portrait Displays (which probably unbeknownst to many hobbyists is involved in other areas too, see #3 on the agenda from the past International Color Consortium conference from last Feb. in Munich - http://www.color.org/events/munich20...ich2018.xalter) I heard was given access (by LG) to the LUTs at the LG TV’s chip level, below the UI level, facilitating calibration without the need for an external LUT box and enabling calibration of 3 Dolby Vision picture modes as well as other SDR, HDR picture modes. It would be nice if all consumer TV manufacturers did the same.

Have you made a decision yet about hosting a 2nd (additional) TV shootout this year? If it’s on, please this time list your complementary food and beverage menu that I presume you’ll have for attendees, for last time I watched the classic event on Youtube when it was at your store, I got hungry just wondering what food you had in that spread pictured in the video. The suspense involving the TVs is enough, spill the beans on the food and drink from the get-go, will ya?

Holy smokes! Those are some amazing BFI finds!

So Geoff, what have you got hiding in your shed out back there, in Engerland?

Pardon my ignorance, but does that mean that 2018 Oled owners will no longer need to hire professional calibrators?

Sort of; you still need 3 key things as well as The Knowledge to be able to do a good calibration:
  • Calman software
  • not-at-all-cheap HDR Pattern generator
  • not-very-cheap colorimeter

If you own all of those, then the Calman software can use the Pattern generator and the colorimeter to do an "autocal" on the TV.

Gaining The Knowledge is something I'm in the process of doing, it's pretty daunting but can be rewarding.

A solution –
First off, most importantly, wear eye protection as previously indicated in #2 –

Learning points for videophiles having a take-for-granted approach to their excellent vision -

1. Get routine eye exams to check for increased intraocular pressure as that pounding can destroy your retina as well as your cornea over time and lead to a needed DSEK or DMEK (types of corneal transplants) way sooner than when you become a grandfather or grandmother.
2. Wear protective eye wear during sports activities like when riding your bike, etc..
and utilize a stationary bike trainer like in the Tour de Harvey…..

Sometime when they have an open house you should go over there - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...g#post11978953 , check out what HDR research the students and Ph.D.’s are involved with and maybe provide your perspective as an avid HDR end user.

Expenses are high. Vancouver is the most expensive city in North America. Only the super rich from Japan and China can afford the rentals and price of gasoline.
I know, I lived there before for few years. But thx anyway for the suggestion. I could always take the ferry and stay over couple nights in a cheap hotel downtown. Take the transit bus to UBC. It's a nice spot with views on the ocean. There's a nude beach too.

Good Luck Lukk (https://twitter.com/HowardLukk?ref_s...Ctwgr%5Eauthor), in your new career at Nitrate, Inc. http://www.nitrateinc.com/ focusing on 4k HDR/SDR grading, conform, audio, archival and deliverables including UHD,IMF and DCP format.

Most regular readers here will remember Howard from ‘Appendix E: Case Studies’ way down on p.37 before the included spiel on Ultra HD Blu-Ray of the SMPTE Study Group Report High-Dynamic-Range (HDR) Imaging Ecosystem https://www.smpte.org/sites/default/...-Ecosystem.pdf which I linked on Blu-ray.com I think the day. or perhaps the day following it was made public.

That’s not bad. When we went across it was much worse – I mean the waiting in line just to get on the boat. Maybe there were problems not communicated to our group.

If you go during the tourix season, then yeah, plan ahead and buy your tickets in advance...reserve.
It's not very nice in the middle of summer with all the traffic when you go from Vancouver to Victoria, on long holiday weekends, and it takes all together six or eight hours!

Best is to get a charter flight and rent a car on the other side. ...Or take the fast yacht from Seattle.

* Do you know how much is a gallon of gas (premium) in Victoria, today, on average? Eight dollars!
Of course it's in Canadian dollars, but still. It's because of the whales. ;-)
