Default Rules of Engagement Discussion Thread

No one else watching this? I am quite a fan of Kevin Spade and even if you didn't like the show,
[Show spoiler]
should be enough to keep you tuned in. No but seriously, I think it's a show worthy of one's attention and if it's entering its fifth season, it can't be that bad right?

5th season? Wow I thought it's only been on for 2 or 3.

I love this show and can't wait to pick up the 3rd season tomorrow as I missed it on TV. Really happy it's still going strong and still funny.

You mean the one starring Raymond's brother? I wouldn't mind seeing the other 50 to be honest but it wasn't that funny.

yeah that one. I don't think it even came out on DVD. Season 2 aired last summer, and they already finished season 5. They kept renewing it without showing it. Weird huh?

You obviously aren't that big a fan if you don't know his name is David Spade.

I usually watch this show. It's not great but it's not bad either, it keeps me entertained for 22 minutes. I really like Patrick Warburton and I think the Timmy character was a good addition to the cast.

I'm a huge fan of 'David' Spade and this is simply a laugh filled half hour of television! Season 5 is off to a great start and I'm hoping the momentum continues!

This is one series I will purchase for sure when it hits Blu-ray...or DVD but would love to see it on Blu-ray of course!

Weird time slot for this show next season, Saturday nights at 8:00. I wonder why they even bothered renewing the show with that time slot, where it's ratings will be terrible. It would make more sense to hold it until midseason and use it as a filler in case one of their new shows fails. I'm guessing the only reason this show was renewed is because it needed another season to have enough episodes for syndication.

that's a terrible slot!!

looks like we can kiss it goodbye after next year then.....unless cbs gets smart and moves it back to monday or thursday nights when/if another show fails and gets cancelled.

Hate the new time slot but one good thing is that CBS has said they don't expect strong ratings so hopefully it can do good enough to get moved again to a better slot or renewed again for Saturdays.

The reasoning.

Quote:
For the first time in six years, since CBS aired drama The District on Saturday, a network will air high-end original scripted series on Saturdays. It is CBS again with veteran comedy Rules of Engagement. "We liked the idea of bringing something new to Saturday," Kahl said. Not expected to like the idea that much -- Rules producer Sony Pictures TV. CBS also wants to use Rules as a lead-in for a half-hour comedy repeat slot, which will be filled by reruns of CBS' freshmen Two Broke Girls and How To Be a Gentleman in the fall for extra exposure. The two newbies are launching behind How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory, respectively. “Comedy was a priority," CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said, adding the emphasis was on female-skewing programming.

i just hope they don't see any ratings decline as a result of the show itself....but b/c of the slot they are putting it in.

'Rules of Engagement' on Saturday Works for CBS Even if It Rates Lower Than 'Cops'

Quote:
THR’s Tim Goodman writes that CBS has so many hits, that it has to put Rules of Engagement on Saturday in its fall 2011 schedule. That headline is nonsense, but I’m no stranger to nonsensical headlines. But I’m not letting Goodman off the hook just because Goodman he writes:

Now, the cynical among you will no doubt suggest that Rules of Engagement might have been held until midseason or otherwise forgotten as usual had it not been so close to its syndication possibilities. And you may be right. But the motives are not important.

Um…ok, I’m listening.

CBS is trying to breathe life into Saturday nights with fresh episodes, not reruns.

Ok, I’m done listening now.

If by breathing life into Saturday with fresh episodes that CBS was prepared to have rate lower than the new episode of Cops it will air against, ok, but what kind of breathing life is that? I’m happy to see the move and I consider the glass way more than half full for CBS.

Rules isn’t moving to Saturdays because CBS has too many hits, and it’s certainly not on Saturdays because CBS is trying to breathe life into the night. It’s moving to Saturdays because it makes financial sense for CBS in the long run due to syndication, even if it rates lower than Cops in the short term. That’s not cynicism, and there’s nothing wrong with CBS’s approach.

If Rules somehow manages to actually breathe life into Saturdays, that’s just the gravy train of unexpected upside. But if it pulls a non life-breathing 1.2 adults 18-49 rating and loses to Cops and CBS is still happy, what’s wrong with that? Is it cynical to think that’s a reasonable approach?

In the morning conference call when someone asked what the ratings expectations for Rules on Saturday, to paraphrase CBS’s chief scheduler Kelly Kahl: “Nothing unrealistic. It’s on Saturdays.”
