I really enjoyed this, and the characters were MUCH more interesting than Ayer's previous work in Suicide Squad. Smith and Edgerton work great as a team, and I was absolutely riveted everytime Rapace graced the screen. Did any of you guys get an Underworld vibe from this? I sure did.

I think it's great. I found the characters to be well developed and the story interesting. I've not seen anything else quite like it, and that is what I liked most. I'd definitely be up for more of this world.

I enjoyed watching the film, but a much deeper dive into the history/lore of that world would've helped immensely, IMO... you're thrust into it without much context to make sense of it, so it lacks a solid foundation to build its mythos upon.

I enjoyed it more then the last jedi as the plot of the movie more or less made sense which is kind of an accomplishment when a movie includes magic. I do feel like the movie was more of a tv pilot then a feature film though. It would have helped vastly to have a firmer grasp on the history and tensions of all the various groups which show speciesism for each other.

I didn't think it was very good but it's nowhere near the worst either. I wonder if that so-called reviewer calling it the worst movie of the year would've still said the same thing had it just been another theatrical release instead of being Netflix's first big-budget movie. It's all about chasing clicks, after all.

Garbage like this movie is why Netflix will be doomed long term. Overpaying to make bad original content. They can only lose so much money for so long and then Disney Streaming will absolutely crush them down the line.

I personally like Ayer. Even the hated SS had it's moments, you could tell that studio interference were really the culprits as I found some stuff to actually be quite effective. Smith and Davis's performances especially. Looking forward to watching Bright, looks goofy enough to work for me. Mid tier thrillers have become a thing of the past because Hollywood is all or nothing now with boring 50 billion dollar budgets so maybe streaming can bring back the mid budget picture. I think, I really think, this film feels more like a sequel to a previous movie. I want to see just how Nick got on the force (how his own parents reacted and how he got ostracized by his own kind) and how he got partnered with Daryl. One could say the filmmaker's should say to leave that to your imagination, but I just feel that would be way more fascinating. I want to see Nick's story more than Daryl so I hope a sequel focuses more on him. I usually love Will Smith and he was good in this but I just think Edgerton outshined him.

Well I gave it the benefit of the doubt and like I said I like the director and orcs and I also dig fantasy and gritty cop movies. The first hour is a tolerable romp back to 1990s action pictures but that last 20 minutes or so is just unwatchable. If the orc's make up and Joel Edgerton weren't good this may be one of the worst films I've seen in a while. It also looks a lot cheaper than a 90 million dollar film. Looks like a tv show. Noomie is criminally underused/undervalued. Oh well.

I thought it was "average", to lower-than-average.
I just watched it, and then I was like, "OK then." It's funny to see Veronica Ngo in a movie again. She was Rose's sister, Paige in TLJ (at the beginning, in the bomber). She's the evil elf hench-woman with Leila in this movie. I saw BAY RONG several years ago, and wondered if I'd ever see her again in a movie. I want to go to Vietnam and try to meet her. Tee-hehe. Other than that... I don't really have much to say about BRIGHT. It's nowhere near as thought-provoking in its attempted themes of racial inequality that it wants to present. Additionally, there's the idea of some kind of deep-rooted backstory and history of the fantasy creatures/societies that never really got properly represented or established, because it was stuck in the "buddy cop" movie mode. That means it's essentially a "fight through the streets" movie a-la THE WARRIORS, but tries to hint at some long history of this version of earth. It failed at that. Then again, I think they want to make sequels to expand the scope. Too bad it doesn't work in this movie, should it remain as a standalone film. Yes, it's a parallel to ALIEN NATION, but at least in that movie it was about the first "alien" cop in L.A., where aliens have only been around for a few years at that point, and racial tensions are high in EXACTLY the same way orcs and humans are conflicted in this movie. I give more leeway to ALIENATION, though, because the premise works better with a more recently integrated race of people, instead of the awkwardly handled "orcs are poor, humans are in between, elves are rich" simplicity of BRIGHT. So, the movie's not so bright, but as a time wasting piece of entertainment fluff, it's fine. Last edited by KcMsterpce; 12-29-2017 at 09:37 AM. |
