One, the hard drives themselves may not physically work by then, and two, the hardware and software to read them may be hard to find. This is why the data has to be constantly migrated to a new platform every few years. With film, as long as the stock is stable and put into climate-controlled storage, it can be left with minimal maintenance retrieved years later.

Even movies shot and/or finished digitally should have YCM separation masters made.

Digital is no panacea to storage problems, and it has its own problems.
What's really scary is sometimes a hard drive refuses to let you pull data off of it. You can still read it or print text documents from it, but it won't let you copy or move the files.

Is Mockingjay Part 1 an upconversion? It was filmed with the Arrix Alexa. That cameras maximal resolution is 2.8K...

It doesn't matter as it still received a 4K master much like Skyfall as it was shot with the same camera system.

Shot in 2.8K and some in 4K, but the DI is indeed 2K.

Lucy was also shot with IMAX cameras, but the entire movie was hardmatted to 2.40:1.

Some interviews about Lucy, pointing about the DI.

Quote:
Did you film in 8K?

No, we worked in 4K. We were aware that we had a racing car, but we didn't want to step too hard on the accelerator! For this film, 8K was not needed, especially as the film will be released in 2K in most cinemas.

Of course, there were exclusive showings planned in 4K, but the release prints were to be in 2K. The special effects department was very pleased with the 4K files we provided. I think 8K would have significantly increased their computing time.

8K is obviously a good thing in itself because, as we always say, it's better to start too high and come back down and of course we would have been able to get a better 4K file from an 8K file. From the preparation stage of the film, I insisted that Luc film in 4K. At that time, the first 4K screens and televisions were starting to appear. Dynamic 4K is already here, perhaps more in the United States than in France, but it's started

Did you shoot it in 4K?

Yes, of course, we shot in 4K. I think there will be selected screenings in 4K. But probably 90% of the film release will be projected in 2K.
Quote:
Have you seen the finished film yet?

Yes. I’ve seen the movie. But not the 4K screening yet. Luc asked me to come to a screening a few days ago, but I was not available because I am shooting the Jean-Paul Rappeneau movie (“Belles familles”) no

Having the 4K files and not using it for the Blu-ray.... Unless Universal Pictures can give us confirms.

You may blame Brad Bird for that, it was his decision

But the Blu-ray does contain the feature: filming in IMAX.

I just wanted a shifting ratio like we got with TRON: Legacy. The shifts in that film are flawless because they happen during scene or camera changes.

You sure?

Shooting in 4K is not the same as mastering in 4K.

For example, parts of Transformers 4 were shot in 6K, but the movie was finished in 2K.

See my post (2 days back) there was already a 4K master. But the majority did get 2K.

I read that post. To me, it sounds like they shot in 4K but finished in 2K.

Here's the BD press release -- no mention of 4K.
