1) Gladiator has been one of the most wanted titles since the format's inception 2) Sapphire series, by Paramount's own marketing, should be held to a higher standard and should be top tier (or at least as good as the title can be) 3) Easy comparison can be made between Extended footage and Theatrical cut footage - it's easy to see what the movie could be like. |

No, the Extended Edition scenes are seamlessly branched into the Theatrical Edition. The Theatrical Edition has the EE and DNR applied, the Extended Edition scenes do not.

The problem is that if you watch the extended version, the disc uses seamless branching to add in the extended scenes. So you literally jump back and forth between the theatrical cut and the extended cut during the movie. It would probably have been better if the studio just would have applied DNR/EE to the extended cut scenes as well so the movie is at least consistent. |

So it's not like someone can say they'll only watch the extended version and not care since most of the extended version is exactly the same as the theatrical version. |

It's a shame to see all this. I don't have the DVD anymore so I do want this movie at some point, that said I'm in no rush to buy it. Braveheart and the Star Trek singles coming out this month I'm definitely grabbing. I'll be holding on Gladiator till I hear about the double dip edition or I see it on sale ($20 max) and am in a mood to watch it. If I can wait for LOTR EE I can certainly wait to see what happens with Gladiator (I'm less interested in sword movies lately anyways).

I still think I'm buying the package tomorrow.
If I get burned, I get burned. But I want to decide for myself whether it looks bad, distracting, etc. I don't need "insiders" or "experts" at this or any other site to make up my mind for me. |

just so i'm clear, it's not like the studio said: "well, we're gonna give them both versions but make the entire extended cut look awesome."
it's either watch the theatrical in it's "sub-par" quality or watch the extended version with "sub-par" theatrical scenes w/awesome extended scenes mixed in. yes?? |

IMO this was a great movie that I can enjoy regardless of a few disappearing arrows, some DNR and EE. I'll decide for myself, but one thing I am certain of is this; even if it has a shockingly bad PQ, it won't ruin my life. |

The extended really could be from a better master that they are saving for the double-dip crowd. Which is TOTALLY LAME considering this "Sapphire Series" is supposed to be top notch PQ/AQ.
I'll buy that one too though. I still have Let the Right One In with bad subs. Good movies are worth it. |

![]() If you watch the extended version, you will be seeing the theatrical version (poor PQ) BLENDED with a few scenes (better PQ) that equal the extended version. The majority of the extended version will look bad. Only the added scenes will have the better PQ. |

I got a chance to watch the Gladiator Blu-Ray last night and yeah, it's pretty bad. Not unwatchable, but definitely unworthy of the Blu-Ray disc it's written on. At first I wasn't sure about the anger and disappointment over this transfer, but now that I've seen it, I know those feelings are totally justified. I have a feeling they're going to remaster this as the chorus of dissenters grows louder starting tomorrow.
