Early reports from those who have the Dutch re-mastered
version is that it absolutely trounces the Sapphire series
Blu-ray.

Run your mouse over the image for the re-mastered version.

Those comparisons are very heartening; they're exactly how I would imagine a proper HD transfer of Gladiator should look. Hopefully, the US version will be out soon; it'll be great to add it to my collection.

Agreed.

This is the version we should have gotten originally.

After seeing these comparisons I'm absolutely befuddled on how
anyone could have approved of the original version.

Is there official word or at least good solid reliable inside info on a U.S. re-release?

Not yet official. The rumor is it will be released with Robin Hood.

Just so you guys know, I just got off the phone with Paramount Home Entertainment. They're going to shortly be launching an exchange program for the new Gladiator Blu-ray, and they've done a running production change, so that future copies of the disc in stores will feature the new 4K-mastered transfer. I'm currently awaiting confirmation of the correct customer service phone number people can use to arrange the swap and will be posting it on The Bits later this afternoon (don't assume it's the same one as before until they confirm it). I've also asked for confirmation as to how people will be able to identify the new disc in stores (likely a yellow UPC). Stay tuned...

Notice the green part in the middle of his chest and how
it was scrubbed away buy noise reduction. The re-mastered
version is clearly superior and full of detail.

At least Paramount is doing the right thing and exchanging the disc. Sounds to me like they are dedicated to making the Sapphire line something special.

Disney should have done the same thing with GONY, but apparently they thought gouging their customers for a 'new-and-improved' edition made more sense.

That's still better than what Warner did with Goodfellas, they just repackaged it and called it new. Let's not fault Disney, at least they went back and remastered it. Instead let's praise Paramount like we praised Disney with POTC and Sony with The Fifth Element.
