i put the regular 1080P blu ray in, and it looks very weak in comparison. the resolution looked aweful, the colors were muted, and the depth of the picture was gone. easy choice choosing the UHD HDR version.
cheers for the feed back mate , im looking foward to getting on the UHD train myself but the player does'nt come out until may here. enjoy

Going to try a different one tomorrow before watching Deadpool so if they won't sell I will just come back Sunday.

Could still be the player mike, it sounds as if the bit depth is screwed on the Samsung. If ray has turned off Deep Colour then the player *may* be boiling the 10-bit source down to 8-bit and doing a piss poor job (and there's me worrying about the SDR transform, silly me, right?), but if he turns Deep Colour on to get the proper 10-bit output then it looks even worse which shouldn't be happening.

There was a HEVC document released a while back that explained why banding would happen with 10-bit HDR. The problem is that SMPTE 2084 was designed for 12-bit and dither isn't that useful since HEVC encoding needs noise reduction for encoding HDR video. When they forced HEVC to encode noise they increased the average bit rate by a huge amount and were getting very high peak bit rates (with the peaks going over 300 Mbps). That is why noise reduction is a huge topic at the last few HEVC meetings since it is basically required for HDR.

Aha, I knew I wasn't imagining it when I mentioned the need to de-noise HDR stuff to Stacey Spears in the Display tech thread: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post11845207

But I still think the player itself is having problems with the bit depth if the comments from people about Deep Colour making the picture look way worse are any indication. At best Deep Colour should simply pad the image with them extra bits and not add artefacting, instead of ruining the colour and blacks. That the player is failing to pass 10-bit gradients according to Spectracal's tests says it all.

Yeah I went yesterday also and they wouldn't sell to me either. I got a little heated with the manager too. I will try another BB today on the way home.

Indeed. If moving up from 8-bit color to 10-bit color introduces banding, something is very wrong!

I called yesterday but found no movies in any stores; they did say they get new shipments in on Fridays so today may be the day assuming they would sell them.

For anyone who lives in that area, I just found out several stores, Richfield and Maplewood have a bunch of Kingsman and The Martian copies in. I am going to stop by and see if I can get them; I didn't ask about the other Fox titles but I assume they will have most of them as well.

Happy hunting!

That should be an interesting conference and HPA has a very impressive list of speakers this year.

The HEVC document on noise was from June of last year and here is an extended version of it that was posted online.

A few people on other forums say that Deep Color simply changes the video output from 10-bit to 12-bit. I don't know why increasing the bit depth would cause problems so it sounds like some kind of bug.

Silly noob question here...

I see a few people already have some 4K Blu titles and some are available 2/14 at Best Buy...my question is, how do I watch them? The Samsung UBD-K8500 4K player (according to Amazon) doesn't have a release date yet. Are there other 4K players already available?

Amazon dropped the ball on the player. Many other members scored theirs from Best buy and crutchfield.

Nope Samsung K8500 is the only game in town (for sometime). Best Buy is already shipping them out, so if you don't want to wait I recommend switching companies.

Yup, that's all Deep Colour has ever done without the content to support it: just changes the bit depth. But if I'm understanding you right it seems as if the native output with Deep Colour off is 10-bit so that's something of a relief. For the banding, it could just be that the player isn't jiving with certain TVs (like the major HDMI handshaking issue I had with an Oppo 95 and my Sony 4K TV when using the higher bit depth options), and given ray's issues it's kinda messed up that the Samsung player is having issues with Samsung TVs.

I got frustrated with Amazon (preordered it over a month ago) so canceled my order and ordered the player from Best Buy on-line. Best Buy had it shipped to me within a few hours after ordering it. I get it on Monday, 2/15, via UPS.
